  • In spectacular scenery close to the Sandstone Trail and local pubs
  • Under an hour's drive from the Welsh coast
  • Near lakes and fisheries for angling; 30 minutes' drive from Chester
Picture yourself sitting on a bench in the sheltered stable yard in the company of a gang of hens, then taking a stroll to pet friendly and fluffy yard cat Rio or to buy some fresh free-range eggs from your host… If you think that picture seems pretty agreeable, you’ll need to set off to Larkhill Cottage Camping and Caravan Site, in the Cheshire countryside just under 10 minutes’ drive from Malpas. As an added bonus, this place looks out over some of the area’s most stunning scenery, with views towards Clwyd, Shropshire, the Wirral, Merseyside and Peak District. And to help you get out and explore, it also happens to be a mere five minutes’ walk from the Sandstone Trail… Friendly owner Claire has made sure her site has plenty of space for family games, as well as plenty of handy facilities. Amenities include a kitchen (with a fridge, freezer, washing machine, microwave, kettle and toaster) and a toilet that’s got a basin with hot and cold running water (but please note you’ll need to bring your own soap and toilet paper). There's also a shower, handily enough. For meals and supplies, there’s a general store in Malpas and the site is two minutes from a chip shop and a good Indian restaurant. Whitchurch is 10 minutes' drive away, with a choice of supermarkets as well as a regular farmers' market.

Liked: The atmosphere was lovely, very quiet and calm but friendly. The kids all ran around and the adults were able to relax and enjoy the peace! Everything was clean and pleasant. The surrounding area was beautiful. Claire was an excellent host.

Liked: Such a lovely family friendly site. Pitched in a well kept field with lots of room around each pitch, surrounded in patches of wildflower meadows. The owner was helpful and friendly. My children especially loved her horses and cats (she kindly tolerated their many questions while going about her chores). The facilities were clean - different from other sites we’ve been on, £1 for the shower and BYO loo roll but this didn’t bother us, it clearly works best for the owner and her business. As a family with young children this site was brilliantly safe and offered lots of room for my children to roam freely. WiFi wasn’t the best but happily gave me the push to put my phone away for the weekend in place for my book.

From the manager: What a lovely review thank you. I'm. Glad you appreciated what I'm all about.. I think it's good for the soul to. Immerse oneself in nature without the Internet and read a good book. It's what I try to do in my garden when I've weeded and mown the lawns!

Liked: Everything!! Lovely site! Fabulous and clean facilities, Claire was so friendly and she had truly thought of everything you might need. Toaster, kettles , microwaves, fridge/freezers in the communal kitchen and all the little bits you might have forgotten. We had a brilliant stay. Oh and fresh eggs from the chickens too!!

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: The pitches were well marked out and spacious. The site was pretty and facilities were all close together and easily found. The shower runs on a coin machine - £1 for 10 mins, so don't forget to take your change with you! The kitchen area was fab and the toilet clean - just don't forget to take your toilet roll up with you as there is none provided. The horses and chickens delighted the kids. Short walk to sandstone trail to go hiking. Host was friendly and welcoming.

Liked: Owners were helpful and friendly, met on arrival with helpful information. Lots of families on site and everyone was friendly. No noise after ten. Good well marked pitches.

Disliked: Limited toilet facilities, otherwise would of scored it five stars.

From the manager: Thank you for your kind review. I'm sorry if you had to wait to use bathroom. It's very rare that I see anyone waiting to use the bathroom and then it's only on a bank holiday when I'm totally full as in this case. I'd just like to make a point not related to your feedback but to the previous one where I scored six for cleanliness. Over may bank holiday weekend I was on site constantly and was sitting on the bench overlooking the stable yard. I inspected the toilets and kitchen countless times throughout the weekend sweeping and mopping and emptying bins and changing wet tea towels.id like to thank the campers who stayed for being so tidy and making my job easier. I'm very careful to always make sure all facilities on site are tidy and hygienic. I'd like to take this opportunity to point out to previous campers who.may be thinking of returning, that I have had a new non slip floor installed in the shower which looks very smart and is easy to keep clean. I've also had lino put down in the sitting room next to the kitchen which looks smart and clean.

Route directions

If approaching from A49 from the north, turn right signed Cholmondeley, opposite the Cholmondeley arms, vice versa from south. Go through the woods and Shay Lane is the second left, turn opposite a gatehouse to Cholmondeley castle. Also look out for a sign for Hampton Springs Fishery. The site is opposite the fishery. Drive through the stable yard and under the arch to the site. Hook-ups are on the left, past the hen run. Don't drive on the far right of the field as it can sometimes be wet. If approaching from A41 south, Shay Lane is the last turn to the right before reaching the Hampton roundabout, again see sign for Hampton Springs Fishery. If approaching from the north, Shay Lane is first left after the Hampton Roundabout. Up a fairly steep narrow lane and the site is in the dip on the left. If the gate is shut, don't worry: it won't be locked even though there's a chain visible.

Local attractions

Setting off for a stroll on the Sandstone Trail is a great idea, of course – but if you fancy a different way to take in the scenery perhaps you’d prefer to settle down for a while at Hampton Springs fishing ponds, a minute’s walk away, or take your golf clubs over to Carden park golf course (15 minutes’ drive). For something a bit more kid-friendly, there are play areas and events in the gardens at Cholmondeley Castle (three minutes’ drive), or you could take a tasty trip to The Ice Cream Farm (20 minutes), which has a whole lot of activities as well as the ice cream itself. And of course, there's always the option of hitting the beach, given that the North Wales coast is less than an hour's drive away. Chester (half an hour) is another great place for a day out, whether you plan to go shopping, visit the castle, stroll the historic streets or stop by to see the animals in the zoo. If you’d like to see more animals, take a trip to the Blue Planet Aquarium (35 minutes) or book in to see a showjumping event at Bolesworth Castle (10 minutes).
