  • Relaxed 30-acre campsite bordering the Trent and Mersey Canal
  • A 10-minute drive from Northwich; Chester 40 minutes
  • On-site tea rooms serving breakfasts, coffees, scones and cakes
Whether you're in the mood for merrymaking, meandering through the countryside or day trips to Manchester city centre, Oakwood Marina is a relaxed waterside campsite in rural Cheshire that ticks all the right boxes. As it borders the Trent and Mersey Canal, a wonderful waterway that runs all the way from Derby to Liverpool, walking and cycling routes along the towpath can be accessed in a few seconds – an excellent way to take in the scenery of the surrounding Cheshire Plains. The marina runs for almost a mile along the canal and hosts a constantly changing collection of up to 90 colourful narrowboats, while the campsite is similarly spacious, covering roughly 30 acres of gently sloping land with views over the water's edge. The surrounding fields are either grazed by cows or mown for hay just a couple of times a year, meaning there's lots of long grass around to shelter passing wildlife (a few footpaths have been cut between the pitches to help guide you through the fields). Guests staying at Oakwood Marina are welcome to light campfires and barbecues (in the designated areas) and have access to useful marina facilities like a laundry room, toilet block, showers and washing-up area. There's also an on-site tea rooms, where you can stop for all-day breakfasts, coffees, scones, cakes and other goodies. To top it all off, there's a pizza trailer, plus an outdoor bar open from 4pm until late. Oakwood Marina is just under a mile from a local organic farm shop and roughly two miles from Rudheath, where there is a railway station and a well-stocked supermarket.

FHU grass RV campsite

Liked: Location

Disliked: Staff member (an older man who seemed to spend a lot of time on a buggy) who was aggressive and bullied me and my cousin because I had misunderstood the manager’s instructions on how to get to the pitch and inadvertently drove on some grass. It was quite inappropriate and frankly scary - I don’t know what he thought he was going to achieve by shouting at us that ‘who is going to fix it?’ As two women travelling, my cousin and I are independent and used to all sorts of situations- however I have never been faced with this sort of aggression and bullying. Very sad because the site looks great and seems to have everything else a camper might need - but I have seen other reviews that mention an unpleasant staff member.

From the manager: I'm sorry to hear of your bad experience at our site. The gentleman in question is indeed the site owner whom strives to ensure the site is the best it can been and kept in such a manor. I can only apologise for the manner if which this may have come across. You may think it is only grass, however, driving on wet saturated ground causes large amounts of damage which takes time and money to restore. If guests arrived to pitches full of ruts it would not only look very unsightly but defeat the object of us taking the time to install ground re-enforcement grids to ensure all guests can park on a level manicured pitch. People wouldn't take to kindly to driving over their front lawn so we expect the site to be treated the same so all guests can enjoy the tranquil experience of visiting our waterside location.

Bell tent

Liked: Amenities in the tent were good

Disliked: Bugs all throughout the bell tent, we walked in and saw atleast five dead spiders on the floor and bedding (which had stains all over it) and then when looking around the bell tent found a nest of spiders all around the perimeter of the tent. We left after five minutes and couldn’t stay the night as it felt massively unclean and unhygienic with bugs (dead and alive) throughout the whole bell tent must not have been cleaned/ inspected for a long time

From the manager: Our tents are thoroughly cleaned before each visit, with all soft furnishings washed after each use. You visited our site, A back to nature sight during breeding season for spiders and daddy longlegs. Unfortunately, we are unable to ensure no spiders come into our tents which comes with part of the experience of going back to basics. No concern was raised with staff members upon arrival otherwise we would have relocated you to a different unit.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: The location is excellent. Nice and quiet and lovely scenery. The barge pub on site was reasonable priced. The toilet blocks were clean when I visited. Owners were friendly. They do have rules which if you obide by then everything is good. No cars on the pitch.

Disliked: The no cars on pitch was a pain. Even though got all our gear loading onto a quad bike then took to our pitch. But couldnt find the quad bike the next morning for the camping gear to be taken back to the car park. Which is a good 400m away. 4 trips. Not what you want at 0830 on a Sunday morning.

FHU grass RV campsite

Liked: This is a great site. Lovely setting with a nice little bar and pizza shack in the evening. Lots of boats passing through including a family of swans. Breakfast in cafe was good but just be wary of ordering a large tea because it’s huge and enough for at least two people. Toilets and showers were clean.

Disliked: It’s a big site so could do with a map for, example, where the washing up facilities were and how to access the canal towpath. Shower facility needs somewhere ie a shelf to put your toiletries. Need to tell the vehicle reversing on the path along the motor home site to turn off their reversing alarm at 6 o’clock in the morning !!!

Local attractions

Start off with some good old-fashioned industrial heritage at the Lion Salt Works in the nearby village of Marston (10 minutes' drive), or visit the Anderton Boat Lift (15 minutes) to see how ingenious Victorian engineers negotiated a 50-foot drop between the river Weaver and the Trent and Mersey Canal. The handsome market town of Northwich (10 minutes) and its bustling high street should be next on your agenda – especially if your stay at Oakwood Marina coincides with its monthly artisanal market. For cities where there's always something on, you could head to Chester (40 minutes) or Manchester (40 minutes), both of which have top museums, kid-friendly attractions, shopping opportunities and historic quarters to explore. Need a breather after all that? Fresh air – and plenty of it – is available at Marbury Country Park (15 minutes), Tatton Park (20 minutes) or Dunham Massey (25 minutes), a National Trust-managed property with a deer park and garden that makes the place well worth visiting all year round.
