  • Back-to-basics camping on a Cheshire farm near Nantwich
  • A 25-minute drive to BeWILDerwood; fishing and shooting 15 minutes
  • Farm site on the South Cheshire Way and with a wildlife pond
Time for a proper camping expedition. Proper as in off-grid and back to basics in a mowed paddock with countryside views near Nantwich in Cheshire. Proper as in traditional camping with few facilities but plenty of space in which to relax and commune with nature. Next door to the camping paddock is a 30-acre area of low-input grassland to encourage the local birds and wildlife, and mown paths through the maize fields lead to the wildlife pond, where you can sit and quietly have a moment among nature. Prefer to be out hiking in nature? Walkers should find it easy to pick up Cheshire paths and bridleways, including the South Cheshire Way, a long-distance footpath also running through parts of Shropshire and Staffordshire. Back on site, barbecues are allowed, so feel free to bring along your grills; if you need to stock up on essentials, Stapeley (10 minutes’ drive) has the nearest store. Don’t fancy cooking? There’s a pub within five minutes’ drive. Please note: there’s no electricity on site but there’s a toilet in a nearby building that guests are welcome to use, plus waste disposal and running water from a standpipe on the camping field.

Try your hand a dinghy sailing at the Nantwich and Border Counties Sailing Club (10 minutes’ drive), while landlubbers might like to try testing their shot at Mickley Hall Shooting School (15 minutes), or fishing for carp at Coole Acres Fishery and Leisure Park (15 minutes). Budding antiques specialists can have a root around for bargains at Dagfields Craft and Antiques (five minutes), and keen gardeners can inspect the plantings and the gorgeous Laburnam Walk at The Dorothy Clive Garden (15 minutes) – pick up plants at Bridgemere Garden World (10 minutes) as souvenirs of your Cheshire stay. Travelling with family? Younger kids will probably be very happy indeed if you take them to BeWILDerwood Cheshire (25 minutes) to run around on treetop rope courses and listen to story-telling sessions.
