  • Pub site a 15-minute drive from Macclesfield and the Peak District
  • Biddulph Grange Garden 15 minutes’ drive; Alton Towers 35 minutes
  • Home-cooked pub fare; beer garden with views; children’s playground
Are you keen to test your hiking mettle on some challenging trails, but equally keen on relaxing in the evening with a nice pint of ale and some home-cooked food in the comfort of a traditional pub? You can combine your interests at Four Trees, a family- and dog-friendly site a 15-minute drive down the A523 from Macclesfield. This family- and dog-friendly site with grassy pitches sits next door to the Harrington Arms, a traditional community pub with a children’s playground and a beer garden from where you can admire the surrounding countryside and the hilly landscape of Peak District National Park in the distance. Epic treks await in the Peak District (15 minutes’ drive) – you might not complete the long-distance Pennine Way, for example, but surely even walking a handful of miles through moorlands and limestone dales will give you bragging rights with your mates. After a few days’ trekking, you might like to wind down with a spot of angling at Bosley Reservoir (five minutes), where you might catch pike and perch (be sure to contact the local fishing club for permits). While you wait for the big one to bite, keep your eyes peeled for Canada geese, buzzards and other birds. If you’d rather be on the water than on the shore, Rudyard Lake (15 minutes) has a lively sailing club where you can get a permit to launch your canoe or paddleboard (please note, there is no equipment for hire here). The site comes with a toilet block, showers, and a washing-up area with a drying room, plus chemical waste disposal.

Liked: Small, quiet, exactly as described. Good food in neighbouring pub. Nice walk around reservoir only 5 minutes away.

Disliked: I can see how road noise might be a problem if you sleep lightly.

FHU cement/asphalt and grass RV campsite

Liked: Easy to park, bar staff were very friendly good food although some was overpriced.

Disliked: Thought the owner could have been friendlier and more welcoming, as a small business owner we work hard to make sure our customers receive the highest level of customer service. Just an acknowledgment would have been nice but he’s too busy with his regulars, wouldn’t take much manners to say hello everything ok. This should be a free stopover as facilities are poor 2 x toilets one inside a shower in desperate need of refurbishing. Even if it was £20 a night and then you got some discount in the pub would be better as it’s literally a car park. Sadly we won’t be returning again, this site has so much more potential.

From the manager: Sorry to hear that I wasn’t friendly enough but I was the one who greeted you and booked you in for another night on top off your original booking and I may be the owner of the pub but I am not the owner of the campsite we manage the bookings and clean the facilities but if you did have any complaints I would gladly tried to resolve them, but you were also not much of a friendly face to approach so my staff mentioned but if they did give you good service why is it such a big deal with me talking to other people especially when it comes to my bread and butter which are the locals, I always try and make the effort with campers but only if they also seem to be interested in me talking to them, some just like to do their own thing with partners and enjoy a break. Thanks

FHU cement/asphalt and grass RV campsite

Liked: Proximity to a nice pub, serving good food with very friendly staff, at a good price. No headache: you do your stuff with a lot of autonomy, clear indications provided beforehand. Clearly a good option when you have to shoot off and fly from Manchester the day after.

Disliked: Proximity to a road, which can make the place noisy.

FHU cement/asphalt and grass RV campsite

Liked: It’s a small site, but the facilities were lovely and clean. Good communication from Steve the owner/manager. We stayed the 2 nights the pub was shut which didn’t bother us, but can’t comment on what it would be like the rest of the week.

Disliked: Didn’t actually bother us as we are not lite sleepers but it’s right next to a busy road so if you are a lite sleeper this may be a problem.

Local attractions

National Trust - Biddulph Grange Garden (15 minutes’ drive) was created in the mid-1800s. In addition to peaceful tree-shaded paths, there is a collection of rhododendrons and the colourful Dahlia Walk, plus themed areas like Egypt (with a topiary pyramid) and the China Garden. Alton Towers (35 minutes) has something for everybody, from vertiginous roller coasters and assorted thrill rides to the gentler, family-orientated attractions at CBeebies Land. On hot summer days, you might want to make a beeline for the waterpark, with its high-speed slides and lazy river. Crossed by canals, Stoke-on-Trent (40 minutes) is renowned for its potteries. Check out the collection of locally produced ceramics at the Potteries Museum & Art Gallery, where you can also admire the Staffordshire Hoard, a collection of gold and silver objects dating back to the Anglo-Saxon era. And be sure to have a go at the pottery wheel in one of several cafés and activity centres in town.
