  • Dog-friendly accommodation on a Cheshire farm on the Gritstone Trail
  • A 10-minute drive to Mow Cop Castle; 35 minutes to The Roaches
  • Pet-friendly pub, canal walk and farm shop within walking distance
Once you’ve cast yourself away to Castle Farm in the Cheshire countryside, castles, farm parks and countryside trails won’t be far away. This dog-friendly site is on part of the Gritstone Trail, a 35-mile route that runs the length of the Pennines and ends at Mow Cop Castle (55 minutes’ walk or 10 minutes’ drive away). Walking’s a sure way to take in the local scenery here, as the local canal is just half an hour’s walk away – and it leads the way all the way to Stoke-On-Trent Trent in one direction and Marple in the other. There are pub pitstops along the route but if you want to fuel up before setting off, the closest pub (dog-friendly) is just 15 minutes’ walk down the lane. As well as homemade food, there’s a play area there for kids to run about. Another pub is 20 minutes' walk away, or a 10-minute drive will get you to Mossley’s dog-friendly pub with a beer garden and good grub. There are places to put your feet up on the site too and nice scenery to go along with them, from sunsets through the trees to views over the Shropshire Hills and Astbury’s church in the distance, with barn and tawny owls sometimes flying by in the early evening. The site has a woodland garden, barbecue area and firepit and on the farm, there’s a paddock with pet goats and sheep, plus secure parking in the farmyard or in the grassland and woodlands to the rear, down a small valley towards a stream.

Local attractions

Kids in your clan? There shouldn’t be any need to worry about activities that will keep up with their attention span, as Glebe Farm (five minutes’ drive) has animal petting and a farm shop and Alcumlow Hall Farm (10 minutes) has a play area, ice cream parlour and blacksmithing experiences. Plus, over at the arboretum at Jodrell Bank Discovery Centre’s arboretum (25 minutes), there are some cool telescopes. For the full-on outdoors, Tittesworth Reservoir (25 minutes) might fit the bill. There's walking, birdwatching, watersports and fishing here, but for rock climbing and hiking, The Roaches (35 minutes) is a popular prominent rocky landscape above Leek (a market town, 25 minutes' drive). You might want to map out the way to some historical sites too, beginning with the National Trust’s Tudor manor house at Little Moreton Hall (10 minutes) and the Victorian Biddulph Grange Garden (10 minutes), along with the 73-acre Biddulph Grange Country Park (10 minutes) - plenty of space to explore, including a pool and restored boathouse. On the National Heritage List, there’s Mow Cop Castle (10 minutes) and St Mary's Church (five minutes).

Drumble 2 bedroom lodge

Liked: Literally everything - peaceful location well away from main roads, etc. Friendly and welcoming hosts and the lodge is gorgeous - cosy and homely with everything we needed. Fresh eggs available to buy from the farm. Loved opening the curtains in the morning to see the goats and watching out for owls and bats at night. The telescope in the bunk bed room was a nice touch. Plenty of towels, extra blankets, etc. We loved every minute of our stay and will definitely come again.

Disliked: Nothing at all!
