  • Spacious site behind the Old George Inn in Sykehouse, South Yorkshire
  • Close to New Junction Canal; Yorkshire Wildlife Park 35 minutes’ drive
  • Food, drink and a beer garden on site; set on the Trans Pennine Trail
Fancy a getaway in the grounds of a pub, with food and drink on tap? Between Rivers Camping is a fine spot for such a thing, set behind the Old George Inn in Sykehouse, South Yorkshire. Here, you shouldn't have too much trouble keeping yourself fed and watered. With a field of almost an acre, there is plenty of room for kids to run around with a ball. The site is also set right on the coast-to-coast Trans Pennine Trail, making it a wonderful and welcoming overnight stop for long-distance hikers – as well as it being a pretty and peaceful place to linger for a few days. Dog-friendly inside and out, the Old George serves up tasty menus and an assortment of soft drinks and craft drinks seven days a week for breakfast, lunch and evening dinners (food service finishes at 4.30pm on Sundays) served either in the cosy beamed interior or in the large, paved beer garden on warmer days. You can use the plugs to boost your phones when the pub is open. There's also a hairdryer in the shower and toilet block.

Please note
  • Dogs are not allowed if you are staying in the accommodation units.
  • Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.
  • At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.
  • Guests are advised to bring a good quality flashlight with them as parts of the park are unlit.
  • Please note that the toilet/shower facilities are unisex.
  • Additional toilets are available during pub opening times (9.30am - 9.30pm). During colder months awnings will need to be pitched on the gravel and cars will need to be parked in the car park. As the site is adjoining the pub, please be aware there may be some noise from pub customers. Wifi is free but only available in the café, pub and beer garden; unfortunately it is not strong enough to reach the camping field and the site's rural location means the 4G signal is also weak.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite (large)

Liked: The site is very nice with good size pitches and the grounds are well maintained. Good selection of drinks and food in the pub. Staff are very helpful.

Disliked: The site seems to be more suited to families with young kids. There was lots of noise from people shouting until about 1am and then there was crying babies throughout the night. The site could benefit from more toilets as there were only 4 unisex ones. The toilets had no toilet paper and the toilets were blocked. They need maintaining more often.

Primitive grass and gravel travel trailer campsite

Liked: Friendly pub and bar staff who were the hosts to the campsite. Quiet and well spaced level pitches . No electric site . Water next to toilet block so a short walk required . Showers and toilets in a modern block but these are cleaned as and when required or when the public go see the bar staff ie soap in dispenser or toilet roll, from experience this doesn’t always happen so you might not get the experience you were expecting . Biggest issue Elsan point and grey water disposal right next to pot wash area with no divide literally feet apart . Apart from that very friendly and you can see they are trying to build a successful business . We would go back .

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite (large)

Liked: Nice location, lovely pub & food.

Disliked: Expensive for what it is. The shop is expensive best to drive to a shop and get what you need. The toilet & shower block only got cleaned on the Sunday morning they was a mess should be in them daily at least.

From the manager: Hi. Apologies about the toilet block, we usually get fantastic reviews on the bathroom facilities. They’re cleaned twice a day every day (‘mid morning and before bed) however this weekend it appeared we had customers / or a customer that liked to make a mess physically on the bathroom walls & we can’t follow each guest out of the bathroom as they leave. Cleaning mops are left in each unit with signs asking guests to clean up after themselves should they make a mess however we cannot enforce that this is followed - it genuinely depends on which guests are on site. Our little shop isn’t there to compete with supermarkets we don’t have the buying power / footfall for that so it’s always advised to go to a supermarket beforehand - we just sell a few snacky bits to top up during your stay such as the price marked chocolate bars, kitchen roll, bin bags, dog poo bags etc Regards Between Rivers Camping Team

Hill Top primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Nice area, pub on site, which is huge advantage (bit overpriced but that's to be expected), nice staff, firepit allowed

Disliked: Not a big fun of the facilities, for the amount of people there was I feel like there's not quite enough toilets. Kept running out of toilet paper and soap also, which was always replenished following morning but again for the amount of people there was, there should have been more left behind the previous afternoon to last throughout the night. There was a sign in facilities to let the pub know if anything runs out but can't really do that throughout the night. Site looks bigger in the booking pictures than it actually is. It is good size, however the tents are kind of cramped and you don't get as much privacy as we initially expected. The site is very family friendly with playground etc., however if you are going camping as an adult group or a couple and looking for that peaceful quiet escape, this is not quite it, as there's a lot of families with kids of all ages.

From the M18 (Thorne junction), turn off the roundabout onto Selby Road. Do not take the left-hand turning onto Ferry Road, which leads onto Cowick Road and Fishlake, as it is not suitable for heavy or wide vehicles. Instead, continue for approximately one mile on Selby Road towards Snaith and take the next left (after going over a bridge) onto Between Rivers Lane. This leads into Sykehouse, where the site is located.

Local attractions

Sykehouse village is in a rural spot close to the New Junction Canal (20 minutes’ walk) where you can coarse fish for roach and carp, or stroll the towpath keeping your eyes peeled for kingfishers flitting about over the water. You can also get the hiking boots on to follow sections of the Trans Pennine Trail or take family walks on looped routes in Brockadale Nature Reserve (25 minutes’ drive). If you’re up for exploring by car, combine culture with exercise and stroll the contemporary installations at Yorkshire Sculpture Park (50 minutes). Go back in time with a poke around local stately piles like Wentworth Woodhouse (45 minutes, grand state apartments) and Brodsworth Hall and Gardens (half an hour, Victorian splendour). Children on board for the hols? Treat them to walking safaris bringing them (safely) up close to lions and tigers at Yorkshire Wildlife Park (35 minutes), or take younger kids to pet friendly sheep and Highland cows at Wigfield Farm (50 minutes). And you’re covered for rainy days as well, as you can divert to the interactive displays at Magna Science Adventure Centre (45 minutes).
