  • Northumberland farm stay with rural views, 15 minutes from Hexham
  • Half an hour’s drive to Kielder Forest Park and 40 minutes to Cragside
  • Peaceful off-grid site; dogs welcome
Eager to explore Northumberland with the added benefit of superb countryside views? Hot-foot it to Bankfoot Camping near Stocksfield in Northumberland. The site is set on a level field on a working farm, completely surrounded by magnificent vistas, and it’s in pole position for discovering the delights of Kielder Forest Park and Northumberland National Park, or having a day out in Newcastle upon Tyne. There are modern and spotless showers on this small and peaceful rural site, but please note that as this is almost-wild camping, there is no electricity – and that means please bring torches from home for moving around the site at night. However, teens will be pleased to know that there are charging points for their devices. Forgot something important? There’s a community shop at Slaley (10 minutes’ drive), or for more major shopping expeditions, head for historic Hexham (15 minutes). Dogs are welcome at Bankfoot but please make sure they are under control at all times, as there is livestock on the farm.

Power optional grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Was very politely welcomed to the site. Toilets/shower basic but clean and plenty of them. Electric hookup available.

Disliked: Grass was a little long which when wet made feet wet when walking to bathroom. Though not a major issue and owner did explain.

Power optional grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Lovely location, very warm welcome from owner which was nice, comes around and checks everything OK, nice toilet and shower block kept clean and tidy, plenty of space for setup, we pitched our 6 man tent with electric hook up.

Disliked: Being picky here, could do with being sign posted at campsite a little better as its quite easy to miss when you come down the bank.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Calm atmosphere, beautiful views. Great for stargazing. We really loved the ability to rock up and choose a pitch. Being able to pitch multiple tents is really useful - other campsites you have to book two pitches and hope they're next door. Check in over phone was good. Toilet block clean and very good - lots of proper toilets and two showers.

Disliked: Only thing we'd want for is a space to wash up dishes with hot water, but for a short trip we just took the washing up home!

Local attractions

Northumberland is rich in history, stretching back to Roman times with the remains of Hadrian’s Wall (half an hour’s drive) and exhibitions at museums including the Roman Army Museum (40 minutes). Mighty medieval Alnwick Castle (an hour) has sumptuous apartments, Harry Potter film locations and poison gardens to explore, while National Trust - Cragside (40 minutes) has woodland walks (great in early summer for rhododendrons) and a mock-Gothic interior. Another fascinating day out can be had at Beamish, the Living Museum of the North (half an hour) – pick a fine day to take a trip on an open-top tram or visit pit ponies in their stables. Get out and about in glorious Northumberland air at Kielder Water and Forest Park (half an hour), where you can cycle through woodland or walk around the reservoir – look out for the contemporary sculpture among the trees, and keep an eye peeled for elusive red squirrels. The skies above the park are the darkest in the UK, so linger on clear nights to see the Milky Way, or book a tour of Kielder Observatory (an hour).
