  • Peaceful wild camping on a farm site in the Northumberland countryside
  • Half an hour’s drive from Northumberland National Park and the beach
  • Direct access to the St Oswald's Way Path; barbecues and campfires
From walks in the footsteps of a seventh-century king to dabbling in surfing, swimming or sandcastle sculpting, The Badger and the Bear Outdoor Adventure Camp is a sweet spot to settle down. This spacious wild camping site is half an hour’s drive from the city, coast and cool landscapes… namely, Newcastle upon Tyne, Creswell beach and the Northumberland National Park. Pulling up here puts you in a proper dark sky area, but it's still handily accessible from the A1, a short 10 minutes’ drive away. You’ll also be able to walk onto the 97-mile St Oswald’s Way Path from the site for a trek past farmlands, sandstone ridges and sea views (depending on how far you’re willing to go, that is). Of course, Northumberland National Park is half an hour's drive away for all the more hilly trails and scenery, but no matter where your feet take you, you’ll always have the cosy confines of the site to return to, where barbecues and campfires will help you to unwind. You’ll surely have stirred up an appetite too, so if a barbecue isn’t on the menu, there are several pubs within 10 minutes’ drive of the site, as well as local shops for stocking up on snacks for on the go and a golf course for some more action if needed.

Local attractions

For those of you who aren’t quite done with the walking part of your break, there’s no need to put the brakes on, as the Simonside Hills (20 minutes’ drive) have a circular walk, The Drake Stone (35 minutes) has a walk coupled up with prehistoric rocks and Winter's Gibbet (40 minutes) has both walking and cycling routes to an old hanging post… spooky, right? There are more attractions around here that have a place in the history books and that includes Alnwick Castle (25 minutes), Belsay Hall's medieval castle, Victorian tearoom and gardens (35 minutes) and two National Trust properties. Of these, Cragside (20 minutes) is from the Victorian times (with a gardens, woodlands and tearoom) and Wallington (half an hour) is a country house where cruising on a bicycle is one way to pass the time. While you’re out and about, you might want to do a round of the local market towns, Rothbury (15 minutes) and Morpeth (20 minutes), or perhaps Northumberlandia (25 minutes) for a pretty huge earth sculpture. As for those places that are likely to keep the kids entertained, there are the pedal tractors at Northumberland Country Zoo (15 minutes), the rides at Whitehouse Farm Centre (half an hour) and Kirkley Hall Zoological Gardens (half an hour), all with animals.

Rental tent

Liked: The owner was very helpful and friendly. The site was very clean and accessible. The tents were set up, with bedding provided (wasn't expecting to get anything like this). Although others were stopping at the site, it was not overcrowded at all. Incredibly peaceful a Nd a relaxed night's sleep.
