  • Quiet south Northumberland site with views over the Tyne Valley
  • A mile from the village of Acomb; Hexham 10 minutes' drive
  • Campfires and barbecues welcome; dinner or cooked breakfast hampers
Sunniside House in southern Northumberland is a quiet campsite a mile from the small village of Acomb. There are excellent views to admire here from nearly every angle, with far-reaching vistas over the surrounding Tyne Valley and out to the Pennine peaks beyond. This rural site has a small number of pitches to ensure everyone has sufficient breathing space, along with facilities including a shower, toilets, a washing-up area and a shared fridge. This simple spot is a couple of minutes' walk from The Mariners and a mile away from The Miners Arms, another popular local pub, but food and drink can be sorted on site too if you opt for one of Sunniside House's dinner or breakfast hampers (speak to site staff for details). After sorting your own dinner, you may also be able to help the farmers feed the lambs. Once you've sampled some local produce and settled in for your stay, you might like to walk the two miles out to Hadrian's Wall for rambles along the old Roman frontier. It's also a couple of miles from the heaps of heritage on display at St. Oswald's in Lee Church and the site of the Battle of Heavenfield. Campfires and barbecues are welcome, but they are only allowed in designated areas. Packs of kiln-dried wood, kindling and firelighters are available to buy on site. Please do not bring your own fuel.

Valley View primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: The views we’re breath taking and the hospitality was amazing. Couldn’t fault my experience one bit. I enjoyed every minute of it and I will be definitely coming back next year!

Disliked: The only thing I disliked was my fault, and that was going late September, next year I’ll be going in the summer.

Valley View primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: The site was very quiet and peaceful (I was not there in the peak holiday season), the staff were friendly and helpful, the facilities (toilet, shower, dish-washing sink) clean and adequate. The villages of Acomb and Wall are about a mile away. Acomb has three pleasant pubs, Wall one (which I didn't manage to visit). It's handy for the Hadrian's Wall footpath and other walks in the area.

Disliked: Nothing.

From the manager: We are so glad you liked Sunniside House and the camping. In regard to your dislike- Sadly this has become the only ‘safe’ way we can allow FirePits on site without fires getting out of hand and accidents happening. We do advertise Only Sunniside’s Firepits are allowed on site ‘they come with kiln dried wood kindling fire lighters and matches’- it is also stated in the Booking T&C’s .
