  • Luxury ensuite shepherd's hut amid three acres of ponds and woodland
  • A 10-minute drive from Ripon and 15 minutes from Harrogate
  • Fruit picking and yoga classes; hut with plush bedding and kitchenette
Take a juicy bite out of North Yorkshire with a stint at Strawberry Safari Shepherds Huts, a site in a scrumptious setting made up of vast grounds leading to public footpaths that connect with Markington, Ripley and other scenic spots. According to the two friendly owners, this is a rural retreat for escaping the hurly-burly of everyday life, set alongside a historic railway line running from Ripon (10 minutes’ drive) to Harrogate (15 minutes). A comfy shepherd’s hut, homegrown produce and three acres of grounds, ponds and woodland to explore all contribute to turning this into a prime place for a swish, stress-free break. The hut has a cosy kitchen with a microwave, hob and Le Creuset crockery, plus the added luxury of a private ensuite shower room and toilet. Pure organic cotton and natural wool bedding is also included, so a decent night's sleep should come as part and parcel of the trip. Before bedtime, sit outside the hut amid the pretty woodland as the sun goes down while watching out for wildlife scampering around and snacking on a bowl of fruit picked from the site’s trees. For the mornings, a welcome pack with freshly ground coffee, tea and milk is supplied to make you feel at home. Fitness and yoga classes are all available; just ask for details on site.

Local attractions

The eastern edges of the Yorkshire Dales are around a 15-minute drive from the site for national park pottering. Begin explores at Fountains Abbey, one of England’s biggest and best-preserved Cistercian monasteries, before moving on towards Brimham Rocks’ striking selection of formations (15 minutes). The area is circled by 400 acres of moorland, so there’s ample space for giving your walking boots a workout. Swing by Ripley Castle enroute for tours of the 14th-century’s building's grand interior and grounds; a couple of other swish structures in the locality include Kirkby Malzeard (20 minutes) and Knaresborough Castle (15 minutes). Haul yourself to Harrogate (also 15 minutes) next for saunters around the spa resort’s handsome Montpellier Quarter, ticking off the intriguing Royal Pump Room Museum, the Moorish-themed Turkish Baths & Health Spa and the lush Valley Gardens with their art-deco Sun Pavilion as well.
