  • Quiet accommodation on a 10-acre smallholding in the North York Moors
  • A 15-minute drive from Whitby and 20 minutes from Scarborough
  • Views over Robin Hood's Bay; five minutes' walk from a local pub
So, you've made it to Meadowbeck Shepherd Huts – what's next? In these lush green surrounds, perhaps the best plan is no plan at all… With spectacular views over the North York Moors and Robin Hood's Bay by day and starry skies by night, it might be hard to tear yourself away from this 10-acre slice of gorgeous countryside. If and when you do get moving, this site's handy location makes it a doddle to get out and about: the A171 is on hand for easy, speedy trips up the coast to Whitby, down the coast to Scarborough or inland to the splendid Esk Valley. Local wanders are also plain sailing – top hiking trails can be joined right outside the park, while the site's games and TV room doubles up as secure storage space for guests' bikes. After all that exercise you might well feel like a drink: head on down to the local pub, a few minutes' walk from base, if you feel like you've earned it (or, you know, just because). Before setting off on Yorkshire jaunts near or far, make sure to take the time to say hi to your friendly neighbours – the couple that run this place have collected a much-loved menagerie of donkeys, goats, sheep, ducks, chickens, cats and dogs. (It comes as no surprise then that pup-friendly breaks can be arranged here.)

Local attractions

The seaside towns of Whitby (15 minutes' drive) and Scarborough (20 minutes) are confirmed faves for hols on the beach (think donkey rides, dodgems and deck chairs). The wilder scenery at Robin Hood's Bay is even closer (10 minutes): if you're feeling energetic, make this your starting point for coastal treks along the Cleveland Way National Trail. Heading inland, explores on the Moors are also highly recommended: check out Falling Foss waterfall (10 minutes) if you're after a fab spot for walks or lunch with a view (there's a top-rated café here that serves a mean bacon bap). For riverside walks or to watch steam trains chugging along the North York Moors Railway, add Grosmont (20 minutes) to your list. To the south, Dalby Forest (35 minutes) has walking, running and orienteering trails, as well as Go Ape if you're up for cavorting in the canopy (those who prefer sticking closer to the forest floor can zoom around on segways). For a spookier way to get that adrenaline pumping, try heading over to haunted Whitby after dark and sign up for a ghoulish ghost tour.
