  • Peaceful site on a 60-acre farm on the banks of the River Ouse
  • A 20-minute drive or 40-minute quiet bike ride from York
  • Three great village pubs within a 10-minute drive
A rural riverside stay on the banks of the Ouse – ooh, yes please… North Yorkshire site Hales Hill Park has a splendid 650 metres of river frontage as part of its 60-acre farm seven miles from York. With that waterside setting comes a fine spot in which to settle for a bit of birdwatching or coarse fishing (seek permission from the owners before getting your kit in place), or just to set up a deckchair, pour a drink and admire some classic country views. There’s easy access to public footpaths and bike trails too if you’d like to get out and survey your surrounds – stick to the rural lanes or pedal over to the National Cycle Network Route 65 to get up to York in 40 minutes or so (or drive it in 20 minutes if you’re a tad wobbly on two wheels). Sixty acres gives the owners plenty of space to play with, so they’ve kindly allocated a decent chunk of it to their guests – which means scope for kids to play games, for dogs to bound around and for folk to safely set up barbecues or campfires for alfresco evenings. Rather than encroach on the peaceful space, the team here have kept facilities simple, just installing showers, toilets and an area for dealing with rubbish and waste disposal. North Yorkshire not treating you to alfresco eating weather? Take your pick from any of the three country pubs within a 10-minute drive – the folk here give thumbs up to each and every one of them.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: 10/10 would highly recommend. Perfect little getaway in a great location. Laid back campsite the owner Bella was lovely and when we got confused stayed on the phone to navigate us. 2 sinks under shelter for washing pots Fresh water Outside dog shower. Well stocked toilets with shower good and clean. Lovely flat pitches and can be spread out. Can have a campfire. Cctv. Has a park. Thankyou for having us :)

Disliked: Only slight niggle; We didn’t realise the fire pit we hired would be collected, We went out for the day and the fire pit was gone when we returned. To stop any confusion when making the payment initially they could have asked “how many nights are you wanting the fire pit for?” Whilst explaining it’s “£20 a night.” Which meant we had to lug the fire pit across the field twice. When we could’ve paid the £40 and saved a job. Lovely big fire pit.

Liked: First ever camping weekend after we bought our trailer tent, what a way to start it :). Lovely site, nice and quiet just what we wanted.. park for the kids, shop close drive away if we needed anything. Easy self check in, electric hook up, toilets where cleaned whilst we was there, washing up area was handy! Definitely will come back again :)

Disliked: Nothing at all..

Liked: The size and location of the site meant my children could go off and play without being too far away (8,13). The bar is run by a lovely couple and all drinks are really reasonably priced, also amazing with the kids in terms of games etc. Tents aren't all crammed together so loads of space too. Lovely football field near bar and play area near the caravans. Riverside location so got to watch the boats and wake boards from the jetty. A really nice walk along the river then along the farm that brings you back to entrance of the site. Perfect location to york, just 20 mins or so in the car. Will definitely book again for a weekend

Disliked: Toilets only cleaned once a day mid morning, which meant by evening they were full of water and the floor dirty. Only 2x toilets and showers for the whole site so was often really busy. There is a further family bathroom with a shower and toilet away from main block, but no hot water in the shower so struggled to get my little girl in as not much room in main block. Also we stayed on the field next to the bar this time, so was quite noisy on Saturday night as had live music. So if wanting a quieter stay, best to camp in big field.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: Loved the self check in. Lovely non electric pitches along a tree line. Toilet/shower block was always clean. Although small, we never had to wait. View across farmland. Situated on river ouzel. Really feel out in the country, but only too us 45 mins to Bike into York along cycle path.

2 bedroom mobile home

Liked: Could not be happier with our stay. The caravan was incredibly clean and has all the kit you need. The site is very welcoming too. Communication from Belle pre arrival was probably the best communication from a host I have ever had. Everything was so easy! I will certainly be back!

Disliked: Being very picky really but the only niggle was that the parking space was too tight for a SUV. We could park it but couldn’t get the doors open without having to mount next doors path, which must annoy them as they kept moving their bin to block the path and make it even tighter. Hardly a real issue though as we just left it elsewhere on the site

Liked: Everything! Absolutely perfect place for our very first camping trip with our children and friends. Had everything we needed either on site or a short drive away. Couldn’t fault it. The staff there were amazing, after stupidly forgetting our electric hook up the night warden saved us a two hour trip home to get it. Thank you and we will be back.

Liked: Everything. The fields are immaculate, the little bar is so reasonably priced and such a nice atmosphere especially if the weather suits. The owners are really lovely people. We’ve camped all over and this was one of our favourites! Toilets regularly cleaned! Decent WiFi!

Local attractions

You’ll be wanting a trip to York, yes? Or perhaps several, given how much there is to see and do around the place, and the fact that it’s only a 20-minute drive away. Start by getting to grips with the area’s history by taking a walk around the old city walls, visiting the castle and minster and checking out the exhibits at the Jorvik Viking Centre and Yorkshire Museum. Those fascinated by things that move will certainly want to make a stop at the city’s excellent National Railway Museum; sweet-toothed types will no doubt find themselves drawn more to the tempting aromas that waft out of York’s Chocolate Story. And when it's time for a pint? It’s said there are 365 pubs within the city walls… Take a break from city wandering with a day out cheering on the gee-gees at York Racecourse (15 minutes’ drive), admiring the landscaping at Stillingfleet Lodge Gardens (25 minutes) or meeting the menagerie at Askham Bryan Wildlife & Conservation Park (15 minutes).
