  • Peaceful site with secluded pitches near three wild swimming lakes
  • A 15-minute drive to central York, and 30 minutes to Castle Howard
  • Use of swimming lakes included in all stays; dark skies area
Pool Bridge Farm is home to a large six-acre grass site lined with ancient oak trees. Even though you’re in the middle of the countryside, it is only a 15-minute drive from historic York and all its museums, restaurants and riverside walks. There are three lakes for wild (open-water) swimming, which is free for all guests from arrival to departure. Lakeside saunas (open from Thursday to Sunday and on bank holidays) must be booked separately. Make your way to the on-site café (open from Thursday to Sunday, as well as bank holidays). As the site is a mini nature reserve dedicated to preserving local wildlife, guests also have the chance to spot barn owls and kestrels feeding next to the site. Thanks to the lack of light pollution, the site is in a dark-skies area. You can be pottering around Rievaulx Abbey or living it up among the bright lights of York, but on a sunny evening, do try to get back to base at nightfall to indulge in a spot of stargazing while cosied up around your firepit. Modern amenities include a well-maintained toilet and shower block a few minutes' walk from the pitches via a path along the bank of one of the swimming lakes, so take in the scenery as you stroll to the facilities (best bring a torch too).

Meadow primitive grass tent or campervan campsite

Liked: Beautiful site. Well maintained. Lake swimming ( we also used the sauna) was a really lovely experience. The meadow is peaceful and magical to have a fire pit under the trees.

Disliked: not the nicest shower but currently increasing shower facilities

Liked: Peaceful site in a beautiful setting. Ideal if you want to make use of the swimming lakes! The firepits and fire wood are a lovely optional extra.

Disliked: Currently only 1 sink for washing up and 1 shower available, but new facilities are being built.

Meadow primitive grass tent or campervan campsite

Liked: Lovely setting, excellent friendly staff. Idyllic swimming lakes. Large flat field. Plenty of space. We did have a lovely weekend stay, Swimming, Sauna (paid extra), local walk, running, pub. Would recommend the swimming, not camping.

Disliked: No tap, showers, toilets washing up, at the camp field. Significant walk to a small, shared block shared with day visitors. Only one shower! One washing up sink. The cost for this is far too high. The most expensive campsite I have ever stayed on. I have had better amenities on £5 a night farmer's field. My score is just for the camping and value for money.

Meadow primitive grass tent or campervan campsite

Liked: Great pools, handsome & mature planting of trees and around the lakes and Meadow, relaxed admin, distance of Meadow from facilities, bird song, carp in ‘secret’ pool. Staff in café very friendly and helpful.

Disliked: Rough roads, distance from Meadow to facilities (!), insufficient facilities (I can see new buildings being started though). Lake access points sometimes difficult for the aged & infirm, improvements would be welcome.

Meadow primitive grass tent or campervan campsite

Liked: Pool Bridge Farm is a very special place. It is a beautiful peaceful place to relax and unwind. The camping field was flat and dry surrounded by trees and birdsong. The swimming lakes that are included for camping are truly spectacular. So well kept with basic but great facilities. The saunas were also gorgeous.

Disliked: The camping field is due for a toilet and shower block soon. This will make a real difference as the water tap and showers are a long way from the campsite and the portaloos were dirty and smelly.

Local attractions

You can cycle into York (30 minutes by bike) along a bridleway accessed from the farm – there’s also a regular bus service passing the farm entrance. Stroll around Roman walls, tour the Gothic Minster and check out the locomotives in National Railway Museum York. Have a flutter at York Racecourse (both 15 minutes’ drive) and spend all your winnings in the designer boutiques at Designer Outlet York (10 minutes). Alternatively, head off into the North York Moors National Park (50 minutes) for biking and walking over glorious moorland – to add an architectural element to your rambles, wander around the ruins of Rievaulx Abbey (50 minutes) or explore follies and temples in the landscaped grounds at Castle Howard (30 minutes). If you’ve got kids on board, Jorvik Viking Centre is a top spot for its immersive tour around a replica Viking village (complete with smells), or you can book tasting sessions at York’s Chocolate Story (both 15 minutes). Older kids might love ghost tours of night-time streets, but younger children should probably stick to the cute goats and mini-train rides at Piglets Adventure Farm (20 minutes).
