Hardstanding pitch with lovely views

Lovely view from the wood-fired hot tub

  • Superior adults-only pitch at a working farm near Strensall
  • A 10-minute drive to York park and ride; 15 minutes to Castle Howard
  • Private wood-fired hot tub with lovely far-reaching views
Anyone who’s ever thought of camping as being somewhat ‘rough and ready’ has clearly never seen the likes of Cowslip Farm. Come along to stay at this adults-only North Yorkshire working farm site and you’ll have access to your own private wood-fired hot tub… That hot tub is a highlight (and just the place to settle down for some time gazing out at the gorgeous scenery, the local wildlife and the sunsets), but it’s not the only feature available to guests – there’s also access to toilets, showers, a washing-up space and motorhome services including chemical disposal. With plenty of space to spread out on your pitch, and set it up just how you like it, it’s a most enticing spot for a comfy and romantic break for two. The location of Cowslip Farm is equally enticing – despite those lovely rural views all around, it’s actually very well placed for days out in York, a little under seven miles away. The city’s park and ride car park is about 10 minutes’ drive away and generally the best way to travel into the city centre for days wandering around all the historic attractions. Foodie favourite Malton is about a 20-minute drive in the other direction and well worth a trip. Closer to home, the village of Strensall is just under a mile away for access to shops, pubs and takeaways, and Strensall Common, a Site of Special Scientific Interest, is about 100 metres away.

From the manager: We have been awaiting your review of your very short visit on Friday with interest. We did wonder how honest you would be and to you haven’t disappointed! Time for some honesty. You were asked to leave the site within two hours of arriving because of your choices, your behaviour, your attitude. No mention of this in your review. We provided you a clean and pristine pitch, secluded hot tub surrounded by clean grass free of dog pee/poo as they are prohibited from this area, clean shower/wc facilities. You were aware before arrival that there is absolutely no provision for walking pets on site, that they should be on a lead at all times and that they have no access to the hot tub area. All of this was re confirmed to you on arrival which is when you first questioned why you couldn’t walk your pet in the adjoining fields and down the private path to our vacation rental shepherds hut. You were clearly advised no. We did get the impression this is a word you don’t like to hear. The laminated sheet provided on arrival clearly advises that visitors will be asked to leave the site without a refund if dogs are found being exercised on site or within the hot tub area. No mixed messages here!!! Then not ten minutes later your partner was found exercising the dog in the private garden/orchard of the cottage at the front of the farm! Why?????? Told to get out immediately. Then when checking in other arrivals two hours later you had your dog within the hot tub area walking it around waiting for it to go to the toilet. As you/your partner clearly had no intention of adhering to our site rules and couldn’t care less about future visitors to the pitch, you were therefore asked to leave the site by 10pm at the latest. Remember, YOUR choices led to this - no one else is to blame. It was you shouting and screaming, presumably very angry you had been caught thanks to a late arrival, you kicking the hot tub lid around the pitch in sheer temper. What a shame as you missed out on what would have been a great weekend in the hot tub! The weather on site was fabulous all weekend!! Pitchup are aware your behaviour and certainly don’t condone it. A shame there isn’t a black list as you would certainly feature on it. Visitors like you give other dog owners a bad name. And the worst you can do is give us a terrible review…..pathetic!! And absolutely no mention of your behaviour what so ever……brilliant 😆

Liked: Had an amazing stay. Lovely welcome from Kim, she messaged us to confirm arrival time so she could have the hot tub ready for us. Very private pitch with lovely views over the field. We were lucky to have great weather and got to watch the sunset and a family of deer from the hot tub. We would definitely return 🥰

Liked: Absolutely amazing ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ We had a pitch with a hot tub and we both had the most amazing time. This is the perfect place to just switch off, sit back, and relax. It was just so peaceful and romantic, with the most beautiful veiws. We was even lucky enough to catch the Northern lights. Owners of the campsite are both lovely and welcoming.

Liked: The wood fired hot tub was amazing and the views were absolutely stunning. Lovely pitch away from others. Would definitely return, mainly as it’s difficult to find a tent pitch with a hot tub.

Disliked: Not a huge issue as turned out ok but had I have known about the strict dog rules on site, I would have made other provisions, and not taken him with us.

Liked: Great pitch, booked for one night with the hot tub. Quiet, peaceful just what was needed, overlooking field, very private and good place to watch sunset whilst having a glass of wine in hot tub... Owner friendly and welcoming, lit the hot tub for us on arrival. Facilities are fine, clean and well stocked, Would definitely return :)

Disliked: Downside was that there was only one toilet and one shower. No wifi

Liked: Hot tub pitch was lovely with beautiful views. The hot tub was fab, and felt very private so didn’t feel conscious about being seen. Felt safe and private so didn’t worry at night.

Disliked: Was only one toilet and shower which were basic but clean enough. Was quiet so didn’t have to worry about toilet being busy but in busier times this could be an annoyance. Trainline nearby, could hear the trains but they didn’t really disturb us.

Liked: Liked it all On arrival the lady met us at the gate she very pleasant. Pitch was a good size idea for our campervan and awning. Toilets and showers very clean hot showers The hot-tub was ready to get in once we arrived (pre arranged before arrival) Ideal place 15/20 min walk to the village where there is 2 pubs both doing food and a Tesco express few other shops etc Buses run regular into York (£4 rtn) I’m defo booking up again Good value for money All ready recommended to friends

Disliked: NOTHING and NOT cowslip farm fault But the road is narrow once leaving the site as no footpath for about 400 yards if you walk to the village

Liked: Kim was welcoming and excellent throughout. When we arrived she quickly showed us to our pitch, gave us a helpful guide and showed us how to use the hot tub. Our pitch was great and just the right size for a 4xl air tent, complete with EHU, a picnic bench, drinking water close by and a wood fired hot tub. On site there is clean toilets and showers and a washing up station. Dogs have to be kept on leads which is a bonus for me. Our pitch was private and no one else was allowed to walk through it. Kim was really strict on this which is good as we felt safe throughout our stay. Really close to Monks Cross retail park and park & ride, only 15 minutes into the centre. 100000% would stay again.

Liked: We had the hot tub pitch - this was amazing! The wood fired hot tub was easy to use. The area was private and very well presented. The scenery beautiful. It was quiet so we saw deer, owls and loved sitting in the hot tub watching the sun go down listening to the birds. The site kept tidy and clean. It’s an almost rustic, glamping site. Great location for York City Centre. Golf club almost next door. Pubs in the local village - also not far away. The owners were lovely and friendly.

Disliked: The mosquitos or whatever they were (not the fault of the site)I did get bitten many many many times - little buggers! 🤣

Local attractions

A trip to York (10 minutes’ drive to the park and ride) is a must, of course – it’s easy to spend a day or two exploring the attractions there, whether you’re walking the city walls, taking a river cruise, stopping by at the minster or visiting the Jorvik Viking Centre, National Railway Museum and York Chocolate Story. There are also lots of places to eat and drink, and a stroll down The Shambles makes a splendid shopping experience. York’s the big hitter, but there are other towns nearby that are worth a look, including Malton (20 minutes) for its independent shops and monthly food festivals, and Whitby, Bridlington and Scarborough (all within an hour) for a breath of sea air. Castle Howard (15 minutes) makes another great day out – the setting for Brideshead Revisited and Bridgerton is a handsome place that often stages events. To keep it all about the outdoors, head into the Howardian Hills (15 minutes), try the Go Ape course in Dalby Forest (40 minutes) or visit the National Centre for Birds of Prey (35 minutes).
