  • Peaceful Yorkshire Dales site with views of Pen-y-Ghent
  • A 15-minute drive from Settle; steam train rides pass the site
  • Dog-friendly site within walking distance of three country pubs
Well, isn’t this a really rather fine rural setting – on the banks of the River Ribble and within easy rambling distance of restorative pints at one of Horton-in-Ribblesdale’s three country pubs: how fab… Cragg Hill Farm is in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, and the views from this peaceful place won’t let you forget that for even a sec. Gaze in one direction and you'll hopefully see Pen-y-Ghent towering over the site; turn the other way and you might just catch a glimpse of the Settle-Carlisle Railway trains wending their way through the scenic surrounds. Settle is a 15-minute drive to the south; as well as being the launch point for train rides, it’s also a good place to source supermarket supplies (or have a swim or a game of golf if you’re shunning such mundanities as shopping). For other days out, it’s recommended you look not much further than roaming around the Yorkshire Dales – although you could also consider hitting the coast at Morecambe, an hour’s drive away, if you’re yearning for a bit of sea air. Back at the farm, life is pretty laidback, with no noisome ents to interfere with the peace, just toilets, hot showers and a washing-up area to keep you and your kit clean.

What customers say

Spacious, quiet campground with lovely rural views, perfect for hiking and the Yorkshire Three Peaks. Guests rave about clean facilities, including hot showers, and ample, well-kept sites. A short walk to pubs and villages, it offers great value. Mostly positive with plans to return.

Primitive grass and earth tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Proximity to Yorkshire 3 Peaks (extra 30 mins each way past the river)
Clean toilets and hot showers
Really peaceful

Disliked Didn’t realise there was a train track behind the campsite, however trains weren’t that often so wasn’t a huge deal!

Primitive grass and earth tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Loved the site, it was completely flat and there was loads of space. Some occasional trees for shade. Right next to the stream so we fell asleep listening to it bubbling along. We got to see the ste train going by too. Easy access to the local village but secluded so no road noise. Good toilet and shower facilities.

Primitive grass and earth tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Great location!! Only a 20 minute walk from the campsite to the local pubs which take you along the river and the paths are excellent for walking the dog. The train station is only a 20 min walk anway and 5 minutes on the train to ribblehead viaduct. Toilet blocks were modern and clean (cleaned multiple times a day). Lovely quiet campsite. Owners were lovely and very helpful. The pitch’s were flat and plenty of room. We even had the dalesman steam train pass a few times on our stay.

Disliked There was only one shower block which was far away but we did choose to stay at the bottom of the farm and for the price it’s totally justified!

Primitive grass and earth tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Absolute hidden gem! We have camped on several sites around settle and enjoyed them all but this one is quieter and the views are staggering. Out tent was pitched looking directly at pen-y-ghent, there is a lovely river that runs along the site which was great to cook off in the hot weather. The river takes you on some lovely walks in either direction. There are 3 great pubs near by and the three peaks all accessible from the campsite.

Local attractions

This is a mighty fine part of the Yorkshire Dales National Park to be based in, as it’s within easy reach of several fab sights. Malham Cove and Malham Tarn, half an hour away by car, combine to make an excellent day’s walk; the Ingleton Waterfalls Trail (25 minutes’ drive) is another that’s worth walking. If it’s not walking weather, get underground at White Scar Cave (20 minutes) or Ingleborough Cave (35 minutes). Not active enough? Those for whom Pen-y-Ghent is not so much scenery as a challenge can set out from the site for the climb to the 694-metre peak. Follow up by scaling slightly taller Ingleborough (also accessible on foot from the farm) and taller-still Whernside (15 minutes’ drive) to tick Yorkshire’s Three Peaks Challenge off your list. You may like a little sit down after all that (or instead…) and a fine place for that is in a seat on the Settle to Carlisle Railway, which you can board at the nearest station a mile away in Horton-in-Ribblesdale. Even if you’re not up for the ride, you may like to take in the view of the Ribblehead Viaduct (15 minutes), famed for many as the route taken by the Hogwarts Express.
