  • Peaceful Yorkshire Dales site with views of Pen-y-Ghent
  • A 15-minute drive from Settle; steam train rides pass the site
  • Dog-friendly site within walking distance of three country pubs
Well, isn’t this a really rather fine rural setting – on the banks of the River Ribble and within easy rambling distance of restorative pints at one of Horton-in-Ribblesdale’s three country pubs: how fab… Cragg Hill Farm is in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, and the views from this peaceful place won’t let you forget that for even a sec. Gaze in one direction and you'll hopefully see Pen-y-Ghent towering over the site; turn the other way and you might just catch a glimpse of the Settle-Carlisle Railway trains wending their way through the scenic surrounds. Settle is a 15-minute drive to the south; as well as being the launch point for train rides, it’s also a good place to source supermarket supplies (or have a swim or a game of golf if you’re shunning such mundanities as shopping). For other days out, it’s recommended you look not much further than roaming around the Yorkshire Dales – although you could also consider hitting the coast at Morecambe, an hour’s drive away, if you’re yearning for a bit of sea air. Back at the farm, life is pretty laidback, with no noisome ents to interfere with the peace, just toilets, hot showers and a washing-up area to keep you and your kit clean.

Spacious, quiet campground with lovely rural views, perfect for hiking and the Yorkshire Three Peaks. Guests rave about clean facilities, including hot showers, and ample, well-kept sites. A short walk to pubs and villages, it offers great value. Mostly positive with plans to return.

Primitive grass and earth tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked From the start, the communication was excellent, with a request to pump the airbed as our 12v wasn’t working, with the owner asking on arrival if we still needed it (we didn’t). Arrival process was easy; self selection of pitch location; excellent pitch; excellent showers that were always hot and; hot pot was and ample toilets and mains water throughout.

The physical location is perfect, with an amble to Horton or Helwith Bridge along the river. We would 100% recommend this site, based on the management, location and clean, well maintained facilities. The ask, would be to have my same spot as it was throughly enjoyable and everything we could ask for. Good work team Craghill !

Disliked Not one thing - perfect in many ways

Liked Lovely spot. Very level pitches.

Showers were very good. Only 4 showers though for quite a large site.

Disliked A freezer would be good to rotate ice blocks.

The nearest shop is 16 minutes drive away.

Primitive grass and earth tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Campsite is located in a great area opposite Pen-Y-Ghent. There’s a lot of toilets available throughout and the cleanliness of them is absolutely outstanding, loads of wash areas as well with big enough sinks to wash all necessary dishes and utensils. Showers really clean as well with hot water giving that lovely home away from home feel. It is a working farm so kinda gives you the taste of a farm life without getting your hands dirty lol. Overall experience was excellent and we are already planning to come back later on this year. Got a feeling this will be our place to visit every year. Plenty of fields to choose from and set up, we could choose any of the fields available. We only spent the weekend but we could have easily stayed there for a whole week and not get bored of the views. There’s no electricity to connect to, however that wasn’t an issue at all for us as we all need to disconnect a little from the screens and enjoy a little more of the surrounding world so a weekend without technology was absolutely great. Full 5G around the campsite so never an issue picking up or making phone calls if needed. Campsite is situated next to a train track and where we set up was bang on next to the spot where they had to signal before a crossing so it might be annoying for someone potentially, but it didn’t bother us. If you’re lucky like we were you can see some great old locomotives passing by as well.

Disliked Can’t think of anything.

Liked Great site! Bit off the beaten track but I liked that as it was quiet. Has everything you need for a basic pitch - clean toilets and hot showers! Loo roll, hand wash and washing up liquid provided.

Local attractions

This is a mighty fine part of the Yorkshire Dales National Park to be based in, as it’s within easy reach of several fab sights. Malham Cove and Malham Tarn, half an hour away by car, combine to make an excellent day’s walk; the Ingleton Waterfalls Trail (25 minutes’ drive) is another that’s worth walking. If it’s not walking weather, get underground at White Scar Cave (20 minutes) or Ingleborough Cave (35 minutes). Not active enough? Those for whom Pen-y-Ghent is not so much scenery as a challenge can set out from the site for the climb to the 694-metre peak. Follow up by scaling slightly taller Ingleborough (also accessible on foot from the farm) and taller-still Whernside (15 minutes’ drive) to tick Yorkshire’s Three Peaks Challenge off your list. You may like a little sit down after all that (or instead…) and a fine place for that is in a seat on the Settle to Carlisle Railway, which you can board at the nearest station a mile away in Horton-in-Ribblesdale. Even if you’re not up for the ride, you may like to take in the view of the Ribblehead Viaduct (15 minutes), famed for many as the route taken by the Hogwarts Express.
