  • Adults-only site 10 minutes’ drive from Richmond in North Yorkshire
  • Catterick Racecourse five minutes’ drive; Easby Abbey 40 minutes’ walk
  • Dog-friendly pitches; Brompton on Swale pub and shop 10 minutes’ walk
For a quiet adults-only North Yorkshire stay far removed from the hurly burly of everyday life, Millfields Caravan and Camping is a tiny site tucked away in Brompton on Swale, a historic village mentioned in the Domesday Book. Peaceful it certainly is, yet there’s masses to do and see hereabouts. The lively market town of Richmond is 10 minutes’ drive away, with its photogenic Georgian architecture, museums, a castle and lots of entertainment options from cosy inns to chic restaurants. It’s also gateway to adventures in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, and any keen racing fans among you have the choice of nine major racecourses: York is an hour’s drive, Wetherby 40 minutes, and Catterick a doddle to get to, being a mere five minutes away. And back on site, the manicured pitches look out over lush countryside (great for walking any dogs you've brought along), with simple facilities including showers and washing-up areas. If you choose to conjure up alfresco feasts on the barbecue, pick up essentials in the handy local shop, or you can always head to the village pub for a pint and a pie (both 10 minutes’ walk).

Powered cement/asphalt and grass campsite

Liked: Location from A1

Disliked: Only one toilet/shower for a moderate sized pitch. No wifi. Expensive considering minimal facilities and not manned.

From the manager: Thank you for leaving us a review, we do have 2 shower/toilet blocks 1 each end of the site which is shown on the site plan as you enter the site, we don't have any site wifi but have never had any complaints regarding the 4G available and as we are a private small site, we aren't manned as stated on pitchup but we do our best to make things as simple and easy as possible regarding finding your pitch with our board as you enter the site with your name and pitch location on, and a site plan showing the location of our facilities.

Liked: We loved the ‘adult-only’ campsite idea. It was so nice and quiet, with no children dashing round. The showers/loos were really clean.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: The site was fairly basic but well kept. The facilities are kept clean and the pitches are stone freeand regularly mowed. There are two pubs in the village, one is food orientated and the other (closer) is more traditional.

Powered cement/asphalt and grass campsite

Liked: Clean, small, dog friendly site in easy reach of the A1. The facilities are warm and a bit like being at home, not sure how they would cope if the site were full to capacity🤔. Couple of pubs locally and an easy drive to Richmond. We stopped overnight en route to Edinburgh and also on the way back.

Disliked: Only thing to note is the low amp electricity…. Be prepared, not a dislike just a comment.

Powered cement/asphalt and grass campsite

Liked: Great little site as described toilets very clean, nice local village with pub and shop the site itself was well looked after grass cut regular. someone put only one toilet there is actually 3 as you have a choice of 2 toilet blocks and only being a small site there was no issues for showers or toilet.Only 6 amp electric but i had my heating TV and fridge working all at once ,just bear in mind you might have to turn something off if you wanted to use air fryer or something that pulls a lot of electric.but overall lovely quite no fuss check in emailed my pitch number and name was on the board when i arrived and if you needed help ring them.Thank you

Disliked: not a dislike but turn the hot water up slightly in the touring shower block the green block shower was piping hot ,personal preference i like my shower hotter than most but even full blast was still only warm to me, T bar shower so people can turn it up or down Thank you

Local attractions

Stroll directly from your pitch to the spectacular hilltop ruins of 12th-century Easby Abbey (40 minutes’ walk), or have a ramble along the River Swale to Richmond Castle and the pebble beach at Richmond Falls (both roughly an hour). And of course, there are hikes and cycle rides for all levels of ability in the Yorkshire Dales National Park (15 minutes’ drive). Head to Foxglove Covert Local Nature Reserve (20 minutes) for the chance to spy birds of prey and kingfishers in the moorland, meadow and wetland habitats, or if stately houses are on your agenda, combine exploring formal gardens and a lakeside park at Jacobean-era Kiplin Hall (10 minutes) with a tour of the mansion’s richly decorated rooms. The likelihood is you’ll adore fussing over the camels, llamas and ostriches at Mainsgill Farm Shop (15 minutes), where you can also tuck into a tasty cream tea. Should the weather turn against you, book tickets for blockbuster films at The Station or tour Richmond’s restored Georgian Theatre Royal (both 10 minutes), still with its original stage and seating.
