  • Well-maintained family-owned park on a working farm
  • 15 minutes' drive to Pickering and a short walk to Hutton-le-Hole
  • Luxury heated shower and toilet facilities in a walkers' paradise
How does a hillside setting among the highly scenic North York Moors sound for a holiday? Just fab? Make with haste to the farm site of Hutton Le Hole Caravan Park in the North York Moors National Park, a short walk down the hill from the village of Hutton-le-Hole, and among spectacular scenery in a walkers' paradise. You're within driving distance of several famed North Yorkshire locations from here – York, Whitby and Scarborough are all 50 to 55 minutes away – or you could opt to stay close to home instead, for farm-based and moor-based walks, steaming around on vintage railways, and investigating Yorkshire's old and grand homes such as Castle Howard, half an hour from the farm. (Or just munch your way around instead: market towns like Pickering and Kirkbymoorside are close by, along with farm shops, tearooms and eateries of all sorts.) The park is on a working family farm, a short downhill walk from Hutton-le-Hole village, and has a dog-walking area and a farm walk to potter around. It's a level and free-draining site, with plentiful drinking water points around the grounds and with excellent amenities including a utility room with laundry, fridge/ freezer and microwave, and a luxury heated amenities block with family rooms and hot showers. For the safety of all guests (and the grass and nearby crops), large barbecues, firepits and naked flames aren't allowed on site. Small controlled barbecues are fine, but you'll need to be responsible and make sure they don't burn the grass, trees or hedges.

Liked: Everything about this site is just “Right”. From the moment you arrive you get an instant feeling of pride. The layout, the wildlife (deer, rabbits, pheasants) and the overwhelming solitude that being on the edge of the moors brings. Facilities were very good although push-button showers “pulsed hot, warm and sometime cool water. We however soon realised that albeit we wanted to be away from it all the size of our Motorhome restricted us doing anything and we would be isolated unless we found a solution. The bus service operates twice a week through Hutton Le Hole which is a 15 minute walk from the site down a fairly steep grass path. Hutton is without a doubt the prettiest village we’ve ever encountered and our meal at the Crown was superb. So back to the solution to our isolation? Understanding that the local bus came along only twice a week we would need a taxi to take us to Kirkbymoorside as a first step. Calculating the cost of that leg, then a bus to Scarborough made the choice of getting a taxi from our site direct to the hire car company easy. We looked at hire car options finding it almost impossible to obtain quotes for Uber, taxi or bus from Kirkbymoorside to York in fact we failed miserably. We did however find a taxi that would be able to take us to Scarborough and a hire car company that would rent us a Fiat 500 for the week. We had a thoroughly great time. The September weather didn’t let us down on our time away in fact the sun followed us on our travels from North Wales across to North Yorkshire. Back to our hosts….. We never met them as they are farming and were busy cutting the last crops before Harvest Festival but the entire process was simple and easy. I hope you enjoy the pictures. Thankyou for a brilliant stay. WE WILL BE BACK….

Disliked: Isolation can be a problem unless you have a smaller Motorhome or alternative means of transport. Expect to pay circa £60 each way for a taxi from the site to Scarborough and circa £70 to £110 for the hire car plus insurance and fuel. We covered 300 miles over the hire period and were delighted we chose this option albeit it added unexpected costs to our 4-week UK tour.

Liked: The location was good, with a walk into the village. Peaceful and relaxing site with not too many campers when we stayed. There was no intervention by owners but we had been provided with a contact number if needed. Pet and child friendly, which was good. Thank you for a lovely stay.

Disliked: Unfortunately there was nowhere in the village to get an evening meal (only sandwiches were available). Maybe a vending machine on site would be an advantage in the reception area.

From the manager: Thanks for leaving a review. Even when we are full there is plenty of space! I think we mention we are just a all away and we do try and get round everyone to say hello but we do miss the odd one! We have a busy farm to go with the caravan park so sometimes harvesting and the animals get in the way! Disappointing about the meal in the village, we always recommend you ring ahead and book any meals planned s that they know you are coming as the village might be busy during the day but then the tourists go home at night and it can be very quiet. Lovely for you but not if you're hungry and there's nothing open. A vending machine might be fun but I suspect complicated to cater for everyone.

Bell tent

Liked: A lovely site, beautiful location. Site owner is lovely and it's a working farm with walks through fields and woodland. Been a few times now. Will be back again.

Disliked: Site manager is new from our last visit. Has a bit of an attitude and is quite abrupt. Toilets are closed from 10:45am - 1pm which is abit inconvenient.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thanks for taking the time to leave a review of your stay in one of our 3 Bell Tents. Having just spoken with you, you did say there were some setting up issues with other members of your party which we will have needed to address and as we agreed, it is hard to know what sort of guidance those arriving on site would like. All sites operate a little differently and as we were full this last weekend you can expect we will need to be fair to everyone in terms of access to water taps etc. If you caught our site assistant at a bad moment we can only apologise! Bank holiday weekend arrivals can be very busy but needless to say we should still be as welcoming regardless of the time/day. We're glad you've been before and delighted you'll come back another time!

Lovely peaceful site with clean facilities and helpful staff.

Liked: The location was lovely peaceful and quiet. The farm walk with views of the moors. Showers hot and T block clean. Plenty of toilets and showers. Great to have option of laundry wash and fridge and freezer though we didn’t use on this occasion.

Disliked: Our pitch was a bit slopping but we used our chocks so not an issue if you have them.

From the manager: Thanks for taking the time to leave such a lovely review. Glad you found the farm walk and those views over the moors. We try and offer amenities on site to suit those here for just one night and those for whom it's home all summer! Everyone welcome as they say!

Local attractions

The park is well set for the North York Moors National Park and its many attractions, or for free range wandering around the area's market towns, garden centres and farm shops. Two fab family options are a short drive away: the theme park and the UK's most visited zoo of Flamingo Land, within 20 minutes, and spectacularly scenic rides on the North York Moors Railway, starting at Pickering 15 minutes' drive from the farm. The railway winds up at Whitby, another fab option for families, sand seekers and vampire hunters. Some stunning walks are around if you're here to hike, such as the 109-mile Cleveland Way starting at Helmsley (15 minutes' drive) to run all the way to the coast at Saltburn. For a fully coastal walk, you could also tackle the Wolds Way, starting at Hessle about an hour and a half's drive south, to end up at Filey on a 79-mile route. Other local options include Ryedale Folk Museum, a mile and a half away, the local lavender farms, and a look at the scented trade at Yorkshire Lavender at Terrington and Wolds Way Lavender in Wintringham, both within 35 minutes' drive.
