For a taster of life under canvas on a working dales farm, head for remote Red Shaw Farm Camping, 10 minutes’ drive from the lively market town of Hawes in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. This is ‘proper’ wild camping in a field used for sheep grazing for much of the year, surrounded by traditional dry stone walls, wildflower meadows and spectacular views of Widdale and Snaizeholme fells. Your only neighbours will be cattle and sheep, but do keep a sharp look out and you’ll hopefully soon spot ground-nesting birds like lapwings and curlews, and mammals including hares and hedgehogs – if that’s not enough to keep you cheerful, watch for colourful sunrises and sunsets by day, and dazzling displays of stars on clear nights. As this is a working farm, with machinery and livestock about the place, no dogs are allowed on the campsite. Please note that there is a portable toilet in the field, but no water or electricity, so please bring a supply of drinking water as well as torches and batteries to find your way around after dark. There’s no public transport either, so you’ll need a vehicle to get to the camping field.

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked: We had an amazing wild camping experience. The views were incredible, waking up to the views was a real treat, stunning. The family running the wild camping were very helpful and kind. We visited the Lakes and Kingsdale while we stayed. We even watched the farmer moving sheep from field to feild with his sheepdog. Plenty of space for the children to run around in the enclosed filed and play in the stream. We'll definitely be back to do the three peaks.
