  • Dog-friendly farm site five miles from Harrogate
  • A 10-minute drive to Valley Gardens Harrogate and Thruscross Reservoir
  • Play area and seasonal events; animals including goats on site
Go on, treat yourself to a rural getaway in lovely North Yorkshire at this quiet, spacious site in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty five miles from Harrogate. With goats on the farm and great walks through lush greenery on site too, Windmill Retreats is exactly the type of spot where you’ll want to switch off completely. The countryside site is just a 10-minute drive from Harrogate, a North Yorkshire town that you’ll likely soon develop a soft spot for. It doesn’t matter if you’re headed there in search of some lovely Yorkshire scran on a walking food tour or for the gorgeous flowers and Art Deco Pavilion in the Grade II-listed parkland at Valley Gardens Harrogate, or for rock climbing and swimming. If shopping’s more your sort of thing, bagging yourself a deal is most likely at the Designer Outlet York, an hour’s drive away. Meanwhile, those of a more active disposition can set about taking a stroll around the nearby reservoirs, which include Fewston Reservoir, five minutes’ drive away, and Thruscross Reservoir, 10 minutes’ drive away, or get stuck into an activity with the Yorkshire Activity Centre (50 minutes’ drive). The site’s facilities are splendidly clean, and include the likes of showers and toilets along with a play area for kids to let off steam. The site plans seasonal events on occasion too.

What customers say

Guests rave about the tranquil setting & unique, well-appointed accommodations, often with hot tubs and nice welcome gifts. Friendly, helpful hosts go above and beyond. Animal encounters and peace are highlights. Minor notes: no fans during heat waves, limited hot tub privacy, but overall excellent & many want to return.

Shepherd's hut (pet friendly)

Liked Lovely setting and hut. The fizz and cakes were an added extra. Bathrobes lovey and needed if using the hot tub.
Very clean nice sheep/farmy touch with the cushions. The lady was not on site when I arrived but was very helpful when I phoned her.

Disliked Slight smell of the drains in the bathroom but it was very hot day. I didn’t use hot tub but I thought it could be made more private a little open to all the site for me.

Geodesic dome (no pets)

Liked Really enjoyed our stay at windmill retreats, we stayed in one of the geodomes. The setting was lovely, the dome itself was clean and well equipped, had everything you needed - dressing gowns & slippers was a lovely touch. Was quite warm when the sun was out but temperate did drop on an evening, but thick bedding and blankets to keep warm. We paid extra for the hot tub on top which was lovely to be in with the animals around and to take in the scenery.
Had a walk round the farm and met all of the animals.
We never met hosts but seemed extremely friendly got loads of information before hand and just a text message away, rang me on arrival and explained where we was to go. They also put up balloons and banners as we was there for a birthday celebration.
My only issue was I got too comfy and fell asleep before I could watch for the stars - so will definitely have to return.

Disliked No dislikes just a tip bring eye patches to sleep

Liked Communication with the hosts was fantastic, we were guided to our dome given a tour and left to settle in, the facilities in the dome were fantastic and the hot tub was a godsend. The location is scenic and peaceful and yet just a few minutes drive from Harrogate. All in all 10 out of 10

Geodesic dome (pet friendly)

Liked Great communication before arrival from the site. Very unique accommodation that has been built to a high specification. The animal feeding in the morning was excellent.

Disliked Dome needed a doormat, especially as it was raining, we were constantly wiping the floor with our own dog towel. Also a table is needed in the dome as nowhere to eat anything and ours didn’t have any outside furniture even though this is advertised. We also had an issue with our hot tub that was refunded promptly by the site.

Local attractions

Would you believe that Cistercian monks were some of the first to forge the ancient trail from the National Trust’s Brimham Rocks (15 minutes’ drive) to Fountains Abbey (25 minutes)? Follow their lead along the Monk Trail, with gorgeous views from Riva Hill. Both the beginning and end destination are gorgeous, with Brimham Rocks’ moorlands (with heather and other rare plants) being declared a Site of Special Scientific Interest, and Fountains Abbey being an impressive Georgian water garden with lakes, canals and temples. That’s a couple of historic places under your belt already – room for more? Ripley Castle (10 minutes), just a few miles from Harrogate, is a 14th-century country house. Strolling round elegant homes and gardens is all well and good, but if you want something that’ll raise your pulse a bit more, How Stean Gorge (35 minutes) is the spot. The 20-metre-deep gorge has caves and ravines, making it a great spot for gorge walking activities.
