Want to treat your other half to an intimate break in North Yorkshire? On the eastern fringes of the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is an adults-only site that should help you score significant points in the relationship department. Romantic Shepherds Retreat, a 20-minute drive from Harrogate, consists of a well-equipped shepherd’s hut with far-reaching views over the dales. This luxurious retreat has ‘cosy stay’ written all over it – and that’s regardless of whether your idea of ‘cosy’ is curling up with a book by the logburning stove, snuggling up in front of your favourite Netflix series (there’s a smart TV in the lounge, plus a TV with DVD player in the bedroom) or having a relaxing soak in the hot tub while gazing up at the night sky. The kitchen (with a classic Belfast sink) comes with fridge freezer, cooker with oven, kettle and toaster, plus most imaginable utensils; there’s also a patio area with a barbecue for alfresco dining. Need supplies? The nearest shops are in Summerbridge or Low Laithe (five minutes’ drive). Lazing on the garden swing taking in the views is all very well, but the surrounding countryside is quite spectacular and deserves being explored. Head to Brimham Rocks (10 minutes) for a hike in a moorland dotted with unusual rock formations; or make your way to Fewston Reservoir (15 minutes) for woodland walks. The site owners will be happy to supply a rucksack, picnic rug and flask for your hikes (they also provide a welcome bag of logs, linen and towels, plus fluffy bathrobes and slippers). Please note there is no electric car charging point on site.

Local attractions

Guided tours of the 14th-century Ripley Castle (10 minutes) take in the library and the Knights’ Chamber, but the highlight of this manor house is its expansive deer park. In addition to fallow deer, you might spot rabbits and woodpeckers as you stroll through the grounds. If the on-site hot tub has whetted your appetite for all things spa-ish, you can crank it up a notch in Harrogate, home of the elegant Turkish Baths. Dating from the late Victorian era, this complex is decorated in Moorish style, with mosaic floors, painted ceilings and Islamic arches. A UNESCO World Heritage site, Studley Royal Park (25 minutes) is a water garden spreading around the remains of the 12th-century Fountains Abbey. It includes temples, follies and statuary, plus scenic viewpoints overlooking the River Skell.
