Hire a hammock

  • Dog-friendly East Yorkshire wild camping site seven miles from the sea
  • Two miles from the Trans Pennine Path; a 15-minute drive from Hornsea
  • Stream, communal firepit and woods for den building; hammocks to hire
Kick back in a hammock, build a den or sit quietly with a book by the stream… in the two-acre woodlands at Springfield Woods in the village of Skirlaugh, it may feel easy to forget that the seaside action of Hornsea is just 15 minutes’ drive away and the city of Hull 20 minutes’ drive away. In fact, you'll probably forget quite a few aspects of modern life once you've pitched up for your East Yorkshire wild camping break with the woodlands on one side and the trickling Lambwath stream on the other. You'll be able to clock in for some quality time with an accomplice of your choice here, as this site welcomes families and dogs. There’s a car park, a communal firepit for warm, sociable nights and plenty of space in the woodlands to hang up a hammock (hire one from the site or bring your own) while the kids gather wood to build their own makeshift shelter. Cyclists and walkers alike can cross over a field to follow a footpath for two miles towards the Trans Pennine Trail, a lengthy walking, cycling or horse riding route through some splendid countryside. While things are certainly peaceful on the site, you shouldn't feel like you’re completely cut off. There’s a historic village pub that serves homecooked food five minutes’ walk away, close to a food shop where you can get together a nice trove of things to snack on while you unwind or cycle around East Yorkshire’s easy-going country roads.

What customers say

Springfield Woods: A peaceful, nature-focused getaway with spacious, well-kept sites and a "wild camping" vibe. Guests love the friendly owners, beautiful woods & stream, and great kids' activities. Some noted issues with the single composting toilet and waste. Parking a short walk away enhances tranquility for many.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Lovely quiet area and excellent trees for a hammock. We were the only ones here for a couple of nights and owner was happy for us to have some visitors.

Disliked Had some issues with a couple piles of dog waste on our plot but nothing that can’t be picked up.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Lovely location based in lovely woodland. Only a few pitches in easy reach of the cars which are left parked up in a field near the farmhouse. The outside shower was lovely (but it was the hottest day of the year so far on our stay)

Disliked Plenty of space in between the pitches, but when we stayed a couple of families knew each other and the children kept running past our tent to go play which did infringe on our privacy. We were well informed about the eco loo - but felt it was neglected a little on the maintenance side, as well as the rubbish building up on site.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Omg where do we start this place was an amazing find well worth the visit, quiet and peaceful set amongst the trees and wildlife with a stream running through. We met up with friends for the weekend the kids had plenty of things to do exploring the woodland areas playing in the dens etc.
We went to a lovely little cafe just up the road called lazy beans would highly recommend for a spot of lunch 10/10 from the kids for the milkshakes.
Some of our favourite bits are listed below
- fire pit area
-pitch sizes
-wild camping feel to it
-warm shower
-woodland trail for the children to explore
Everything :)

Will be recommending to family and friends and can’t wait to come back again.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Lovely hosts, loved how quiet it was, really pretty and ideally placed to visit local attractions. We rented hammocks and even saw a heron 10 feet from our tent!

Disliked Slight hill from the car park down to the pitch - but trolleys were provided and it added to the adventure :)

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Absolutely lovely, peaceful site, with an amazing host & lots for children to do who enjoy nature. We have 2 boys, 1 dislikes being away from home and he loved it so much he didn’t want to come home & has cried since because he wants to be back there. Such a magnificent site to enjoy nature and relax. Thank you Ruth for being so patient helping the boys with their fire, they absolutely loved the fire pit, collecting kindling sticks, den building and the slack line, swinging in a hammock in nature is obviously very grounding and calming, we will absolutely be back 👍🏻😊

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked The layout was beautiful and the sense of care and attention the owner gave to campers and place.
Highly recommended for the site and eco values.

Disliked The composting toilet was a bit overused. I think another toilet or two would take some of the strain off the single toilet (and the composting system).
The cars at night.

Liked What a little gem of a campsite. Tucked away just outside of Hull. Site was very clean and well looked after, small wood for kids to play have fun and build dens. A great communal fire pit with pick Nick tables. Composting toilet was good and clean. Shower was fine too. The owners Dave and Ruth were very welcoming. We shall be back very soon for another chill out!! Shush don’t tell everyone:-)

Disliked Nothing all was fab!

Local attractions

In Hornsea (15 minutes' drive), try your hands at some pottery, visit the beach or head to the Hornsea Mere (10 minutes), a freshwater lake that's great for sailing or casting out a fishing rod. If you fancy a visit to a working farm, try nearby Honeysuckle Farm (15 minutes), which has fishponds, animal feeding and horse and cart rides. Happily, Hornsea isn’t the only seaside town within reach of the site. There are also beaches in Mappleton (15 minutes), Fraisthorpe (30 minutes) and Bridlington (30 minutes). And a little further away, Flamborough Head (45 minutes) has a lighthouse and cliffs for puffin-spotting or boat trips out to sea to look out for passing seals and porpoises. To the west, Beverley (20 minutes) has its own pleasures, including a minster, church and market. The city of Hull (20 minutes) is to the south if you fancy a dip into the museums or The Deep, an aquarium where kids can try and find Nemo’s clownfish lookalikes.
