The main field

  • Peaceful, green site on the edge of farmland in East Yorkshire
  • A 15-minute drive from Withernsea and 25 minutes from Hull
  • Alpacas to visit on site; bus stop and traffic-free trail nearby
Halfway between Hull and the sea, with level pitches, is the lovely and green Highfield Farm. Plenty of care has been taken in crafting this peaceful, green site on the edge of East Yorkshire farmland. For one, they have 12 alpacas that you’re welcome to watch (it’s said to help you de-stress), and for two, they never overbook to keep the atmosphere quiet and give every pitch plenty of space. Staying here puts you on track for a classic evening around the firepit (off-ground only); they can be borrowed directly from the site. The days are set up to be just as pleasurable, with the seaside resort of Withernsea 15 minutes’ drive to the east and Hull 25 minutes to the west (plus a bus stop nearby for car-free days out). Highfield Farm is near to a disused railway line, so you could bike on the traffic-free trail all the way into the city. For a shorter bike ride (or alternatively a stroll), the route will also lead you to neighbouring villages with pubs and restaurants. Talking of places to eat, a riverside café with meals and a fruit and veg shop is a five-minute drive away in Halsham. In the opposite direction is Ottringham village (around 10 minutes’ walk), where there's another café, a pub serving food from Thursday to Sunday, an Indian restaurant and a small shop. Dogs are welcome at Highfield Farm (as long as they're kept on a lead to protect the free-range chickens), so there's no need to fret about finding a dog minder. The facilities are also nice and convenient, with a shower block with hot showers and four toilets, plus huge washing-up sinks supplied with plentiful hot water. From 10pm every eve, guests are asked to keep noise to a minimum.

Local attractions

You’re in excellent wildlife-watching territory along this part of the East Yorkshire coast. Keep your eyes peeled for birds at the Spurn National Nature Reserve (25 minutes’ drive), from wildfowl and wading birds in spring, autumn and winter to seabirds like little terns in the summer. If you’re really lucky, you may even catch a glimpse of a porpoise, roe deer or minke whale – keep all of those fingers crossed. If a day at the seaside is a must for your holiday, head along to Withernsea beach (15 minutes). Once you’re done splashing and lounging, you could grab fish and chips or stroll onto the Withernsea Lighthouse Museum to improve your local maritime knowledge. Up 144 steps, there’s a gorgeous view of the coast and countryside to help you get your bearings.
