Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Beautiful spot with lovely views and the site was nice and quiet. A nice safe area for the kids to play with a wood next door. The amenities are basic but we went expecting this. Ground nice and flat and soft for tent and pegs.

Disliked: The entrance to the field could do with a mirror to see the road on exiting.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Big field so plenty of space to choose where to pitch

Disliked: The grass was overgrown, no water source and wasnt signposted very well as it looks like your going on to a random field

From the manager: Responding to the customer disliked comment our campsite has 3 fresh water supply taps. On arrival we ask our customers to come to the farm which is well sign posted so that we can show them which field they can pitch their tents. Every year the field's are cut and rolled and well maintained at High Woodifield you have the freedom and beauty of wild camping plus the convenience of near by shops.

Expensive for what you get, only suitable for tents

Primitive grass RV campsite

Liked: Very helpful owner, unfortunately the ground was too soft for our small campervan. The owner pulled us out of the mud and gave a full refund due us unable to continue our stay. Only gave two stars at was £30 a night and the only facility was a portaloo, no disposal options of any kind. Fresh water tap was in another field. It is worth £5 a night. And if it was I'd give 5 stars. For a pop up campsite charging higher than a fully equipped campsite was not appealing to us.

Disliked: The high price for a basic field with a portaloo,

From the manager: In response to our latest review, on the Pitchup website nothing is advertised that is not available on the site and this allows customers to know exactly what to expect prior to booking. However, I believe our site has been massively underrated by the customer. We offer immaculate cleanliness with our facilities and the water tap is nearby. The site is in a beautiful, unspoilt location. It is not our policy to give full refunds owing to adverse weather conditions, however we felt compelled and a little disappointed that the customers were not going to appreciate what the area has to offer.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: This is a brand new site which has 4 flat open fields to choose from! Plenty of room and with unlimited pitch sizes I can see this being a huge hit with campers of all ages. Owners are very friendly and helpful but your left alone and with it being so big, you have lots of privacy and space. Natural grassy meadows, trees and 360 views it is a fantastic place for children as they can have feeedom but are also within eyesight. As it is brand new it only has toilet facilities, for now- but the ovrerall place outweighs that. Footpaths in all directons leading to shops restaurants, pubs and beautiful walks and with its location being right at the gateway to tbe Dales, your 15 mins away from Hamsterley Forrest or Stanhope Open air Pool, which are also accessable by the local bus service which stops 3 mins walk away. Amazing place, Huge potentioal and 1 nights stays means this place will take off.

Local attractions

What wildlife havens might you visit nearby? Mountain bikers and hikers will want to tackle the trails around Hamsterley Forest (15 minutes’ drive). Closer by, the Hedleyhope Fell Nature Reserve (10 minutes) has plenty of creatures crawling around the gorse and heather, including lizards and slow worms. Birdwatching is splendid at both of the above, but especially at Low Barns Nature Reserve and Visitor Centre (10 minutes), a wetland reserve alongside the river Wear. That’s right now, but what was going on years ago in County Durham? Well, Romans would have roamed around the hilltop Binchester Roman Fort (15 minutes) and Auckland Castle (15 minutes) would have been a bishops’ palace. Durham (20 minutes) has plenty of history too, from its Romanesque cathedral and Norman castle to the museum in the botanic garden, which has Asian and Egyptian pieces on show. Head over to 11 Arches Park (10 minutes) to catch the Kynren outdoor show, which runs on select dates in the summer, and has live performances that bring to life different pieces of British history.
