Touring & camping site

  • Peaceful farm site with a pond and walking paths
  • A 10-minute drive to Barnard Castle and the Yorkshire Dales outskirts
  • Indoor soft play centre, café and farm shop on site
There should be plenty to keep the kids busy at Thorpe Farm Centre, a Co. Durham site within 10 minutes' drive of the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park and 20 minutes from the edge of the North Pennines National Landscape. If dipping and nature spotting at the peaceful pond doesn't sway them, seeing the animals in their paddocks or the many walking paths straight from the site surely will. The farm is also home to the 18th-century Peel House, which has a gift shop and The Courtyard Café serving breakfast and Sunday lunch. The farm shop also sells fresh local produce including bread, milk, bacon, sausages and eggs, and has a (rather unusual but possibly handy) reclamation barn selling furniture, antiques and collectables. The Thorpe Farm Centre indoor soft play area adds another space for kids to let off steam. It has a two-tiered soft play structure designed for kids up to eight years old, surrounded by comfortable seating where parents can rest their feet. Facilities on site include toilet and shower blocks with disabled access, fresh water and a chemical disposal unit. Dogs are very welcome but must be kept on leads while on site.

What customers say

This immaculately clean, well-kept site offers exceptional service. Guests rave about great facilities, including modern showers and a well-stocked shop/cafe. Kids love the play areas, farm animals, and maze. Some note A66 road noise, but most find it manageable or don't hear it. A few mention uneven tent sites or occasional power issues. Highly recommended, with many wanting to return.

Liked What a wonderful site beautiful lovely staff and very nice pitch areas and must say the new toilet and shower block very modern also had a lounge with Tv, laundry and access for wheelchair etc, great washing up sink area, water nice and hot, very secure sight lovely shop, coffee shop and restaurant. Lovely shop with loads of gifts in. The walks were amazing and animals and a lovely walk through the tunnel under the A66 to a local small village with a lovely pub and great food. I would recommend this site

Disliked Only one thing the pitch area is right next to A66 but did not really disturb us and some of the grass pitches are not so flat

Liked Lovely non commercialised site. Clean toilet and shower block. Indoor washing up facilities.
The cafe on site is nice and the farm shop sold nice produce.

Disliked The site is situated on the main road and traffic is constant overnight. Such a shame, as the site is otherwise great

Power optional grass campsite

Liked Space for kids to play. Nice shop.

Disliked Too close to the A66, lots of road noise. Incorrectly booked onto a tent pitch then moved to a pitch that was on a very steep slope (despite levellers).

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your review. We’re really pleased to hear your children enjoyed the space and that you liked the shop – that’s always lovely to hear.

We’re sorry the rest of your stay didn’t quite meet expectations. We understand the road noise from the A66 can be noticeable on some pitches, and we apologies for the uneven ground of the pitch you were moved to. That’s certainly not the experience we aim to provide.

We really appreciate you bringing this to our attention, and we’ll be taking it on board to improve. We hope you might visit us again in the future and allow us to give you a much better stay next time.

Could be a lovely site but the touring pitches need to be moved

Liked Lovely new refurbished toilets and shower block great walks around the ponds and nearby foot paths the animals were great to walk around

Disliked Touring pitches are up against the A66 and this is a very busy road even at night you get woken up all night long

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your review. We’re so pleased you enjoyed the refurbished toilet and shower block, the walks around the ponds and footpaths, and of course the animals – it’s lovely to hear those parts of your stay stood out.

We’re sorry to hear that the road noise from the A66 affected your visit. As you mentioned, the touring pitches are closest to the road, and while many guests still enjoy their stay, we understand it can be disruptive, especially overnight.

We really appreciate your feedback and will continue to look at ways we can improve the experience for our touring guests. We hope to welcome you back again in the future.

Power optional cement/asphalt travel trailer campsite

Liked Handy stopover on the A66. Lovely farm shop, cafe and gorgeous gift shop. Good dog walk off site.
Warm showers, clean toilets.

Disliked Road noise- but we already knew this as on the busy A66.
Showers good, but would appreciate a shelf for shampoo, shower gel, etc. Stool available but need that for sitting to dry feet.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your kind review! We’re really glad you enjoyed your stopover and took advantage of the farm shop, café, and gift shop. It’s lovely to hear you found the facilities clean and the team friendly, and we truly appreciate your recommendation.

Thank you as well for your helpful feedback about the showers – that’s something we’ll look into. We understand the road noise can be a downside given our location on the A66, and we appreciate your understanding on that.

We hope to welcome you back again soon!

Power optional cement/asphalt travel trailer campsite

Liked What an absolute gem of a site!

Immaculately clean, the customer service is the best I have ever seen. We and another 2 families used the touring facilities over Halloween. The scare maze was made magical for the kids, how did you do that? The perfect blend of scare whilst feeling safe. Fire pits are allowed 🙌🏻🙌🏻 Very rare you get a site who allows them. We all had toasted marshmallows after.
Shop is very well stocked, we didn’t try the cafe but looked so well organised and spotless. The staff are a credit to this site, so so helpful and friendly. Showers clean and warm, they even had a playroom/ den for the kids on rainy days…. We have already decided to book for next year! Thanks for the memories Thorpe Farm….

Liked Had a great break with lots of walks with the dog. Very well maintained camping grounds and the facilities were immaculate. Staff in shop/reception were really attentive and supportive. Night time security gates at entrances give additional peace of mind when close to a main road.
