  • Scenic pop-up site on a farm a mile from Middleton-In-Teesdale
  • Barnard Castle and High Force waterfalls within 15 minutes' drive
  • On the edge of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
Orchard Farm is a pop-up site on a working farm in the fab Co. Durham countryside, just on the edge of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and about half a mile from the banks of the River Tees. There’s splendid scenery all around this site – and you’ll be sharing the place with friendly neighbours in the form of the resident cows, horses and sheep. It’s a thoroughly rural experience but one doesn’t involve miles of driving along winding lanes: it’s easily accessed from the B6282. And that handy location also means it’s easy to get out to see some of the area’s top sights, including the High Force and Low Force waterfalls and Gibson’s Cave. For all your essential supplies (perhaps for a barbecue, which you’re welcome to bring along), it’s a journey of less than a mile to the butcher and small supermarket in Middleton-In-Teesdale. There are also takeaways, cafés and a pub in town if you’d rather someone else took care of the food and drink. Bigger Barnard Castle, 15 minutes’ drive away, has more in the way of shops and eateries too.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Graham - the owner is such a nice bloke. We arrived on Monday to torrential rain so decided to come back the next day instead and he insisted we stayed the next two nights so that we didn’t lose out on a nights stay - he didn’t have to do that and I was genuinely taken aback by his generosity. Would happily come back and stay here again! The site has some stunning views and it’s only a short walk into the village too.

Disliked: Toilets and shower a bit old and in need of some modernising but does the job!

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: The host was very welcoming. No set pitches

Disliked: The one shower on site didn't work. Facilities were sparce and not clean. The hot water tap on the one sink spun round and didn't actually work and the cold water tap was just a trickle so no way to get properly clean. Site is right next to a busy road so very noisy. The field is on a slope. Had to leave a night early due to awful weather, no mention of a refund. If you like wild camping then this is the place for you but not suitable otherwise.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Great location in county Durham . 5 mins walk from the Middleton on Teessdale Fabulous walk at the riverside. Campsite got very basics toilet facilities and there is only one shower. If campsite is not overload with people it can work, however is not enough when it gets busier. On the plus side, farm owner is the most kind and lovely person ever. you can watch miniatures cows and horses, buy fresh eggs and potatoes. Yes its basic but the atmosphere there is friendly and welcoming. He makes sure everyone is ok and brings logs for your campfire :)

Disliked: toilet and showers could be upgraded but for couple of nights is doable .
