  • Secluded site 25 mins' drive from Barnard Castle, on the Pennine Way
  • Grassholme Observatory 20 minutes’ drive; Hamsterley Forest half-hour
  • Views over Blackton and Hury reservoirs, with fishing available
Looking for the mother of all walking holidays? A stay at Haggworm Hall should surely make your shortlist. A 25-minute drive from Barnard Castle in County Durham, this family-friendly site sits on a (mostly) level enclosed field with expansive views of Baldersdale’s moorland. You may already think that sounds right up your alley. But wait, there’s more: the Pennine Way is only about 300 metres from the site, so you can return home after your break claiming to have walked this challenging long-distance trail – or at least a few stretches of it. (Though you don’t have to share that last bit.) If you travel due north, a half-hour walk takes you to Hannah's Meadows, an upland hay meadow where you might spot skylarks and curlews. The site overlooks the Blackton and Hury reservoirs, meaning that fishing is within easy reach, and there’s also an abundance of trout at nearby Balderhead Reservoir (five minutes’ drive). Since the whole area is renowned for its minimal light pollution, you would be advised to bring some comfy seating and your warmest blanket so you can settle down for an evening of stargazing too. Well-behaved dogs are welcome here, but they must be kept under control in order not to spook the livestock in the adjoining fields. Barbecues are allowed, and you can buy provisions at Middleton-in-Teesdale (20 minutes) or at Barnard Castle, which has plenty of places to eat. The nearest pubs are in Cotherstone (15 minutes). Please note, there are toilets on site, but no showers.
