Powered cement/asphalt campsite

Liked: Only the man who we think ran ir.

Disliked: The facilities were awful, booked 3 nights but only stayed 1 could not face the shower and went without and used our portable loo.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Dear Janet, I am really sorry but there are 3 toilet cabins (with gents/female toilets) and 4 showers on site, which for some strange reason you weren't aware of. So there is a shower and portaloo toilet in the woods, one toliet cabin and shower opposite the house and 2 showers on the Cl site. So there are a total of 9 toilets on site, (with separated cubicles between male and female) and 4 showers, all within a 2 or 3 minutes walk from you! So I'm therefore very confused as to why you had to use your own portable loo, which definitely wasn’t necessary with that number of toilets on site (i.e. 9)! These toilets were also mentioned in 2 separate welcome emails to you before arrival. These are also always cleaned everyday by me. There is no way on earth that I would let them become too unclean. The only person I trust to clean them now is me!!! Sorry, if you were by some unknown reason not aware that there were this number of toilets and showers on site, I really really apologise for not making it clearer. All welcome emails have now been updated to make it crystal clear so that this never happens again. I can’t physically add any more toilets to the site!!!

Disliked: We mainly used our own facilities but we were not keen on the mixed toilets and shower

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Dear Paul, thank you for your review. It was nice to meet you. RE : “we were not keen on the mixed toilets and shower” Just to be crystal clear here, there are now 4 showers on site, so there is definitely not just one “shower”, as you have indicated. I agree all the 4 showers are currently mixed (unisex), which I might change one or two to male and female showers at some point. I just can’t work out who should get the best shower yet!! RE: "the mixed toilets" I agree the portaloo toilet is mixed (unisex), but the other 3 toilet cabins have separated cubicles between male and female. There is also a separated gents toilet and another separate ladies toilet on the CL, which you were welcome to use, as stated in your welcome email. I normally personally clean these every day myself, so am slightly dismayed with myself that you gave it “6/10”, but I was probably chatting with you too much and not doing enough cleaning! (Note to self: less chat about rescue dogs– more cleaning needed!) I am also slightly dismayed that the Wi-Fi was only “6/10” when I have personally put one of the most powerful Wi-Fi transmitters on the market in the hedge outside your caravan on Pitch 11, with a 300m range!! I apologise if it wasn’t quite up to Romford, Essex, speeds, but then you’re staying on the edge of a wood at the end of the day. We try our best here!

Liked: Liked the separate pitches which were spaced out between trees. Good location for walks & to a pub. Quiet after 10pm. Good having a bin & water tap close by.

Disliked: In our area the toilet was a porta loo which had to be pumped to flush and only had cold water to wash hands. Proper toilets were on site not too far, but only two toilets which were occupied on a few occasions. If the toilets and hot running water was better, I’d happily return !

From the manager: Thank you for your review. I am sorry that you thought that there were "only two toilets which were occupied on a few occasions". Just to be 100% clear here, there are actually 3 toilet cabins (with gents/female toilets) and 4 showers on site, which you are welcome to use, as stated in the welcome emails. So there is a shower and portaloo toilet in the woods, one toliet cabin and shower opposite the house and 2 showers and 2 toilet cabins on the Cl site. = 9 toilets. So there are a total of 9 toilets on site, (with mostly being separated cubicles between male and female) and 4 showers all with in a 2 or 3 mins walk from you. These toilets are also always cleaned everyday by me, as I don't trust a cleaner to do this, as from past experiences they never clean them well enough. There is no way on earth that I would let them become too unclean, so 2/5 is a bit mean but I will clean them harder from now on! Jaik (BSc, MSc)

Liked: Lovely site, which is located in the countryside and is ideal for nice walks. There are ample shower/toilet blocks on the site and there are notices regarding local events, including discount vouchers for the local pub, The Fox. Wifi was available on site. We enjoyed a nice long walk down the lane and into Darsham village, including visiting the local historical church. There is a very well stocked Farm Shop a short distance away, which we visited in the motorhome, 'Emmerdale Farm Shop' which sells a large variety of items, from fresh produce to frozen meals/pastries, ice cream and jams/chutneys, cakes, biscuits, sweets and more. It is located here: IP17 3BP and we definitely recommend it. There is also a cafe serving food next door. We stayed 2 nights at Hill Farm and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Where we were pitched, we could hear some traffic but this was not a problem, as it was very quiet overall, and we slept well both nights. On occasion we could also hear the gentle sound of the local train during the day, which we quite enjoyed, along with the lovely birdsong. Will definitely book again.

Disliked: Nothing.

Liked: Friendly welcome and help from Jaik. Could chose my own large pitch in secluded glade area. Clean facilities.

Disliked: Not the fault of the site: two campers allowed their dogs off lead one of which followed me and my dog for some distance growllng and barking and whenever we passed her pitch and another whose owner told me it was a recent rescue dog who would go for anyone or any dog it came across. Meanwhile my dogs were permanently on lead. I was anxious that the white dog (no collar or lead) would come up to my pitch. Shame rules can't be upheld.

From the manager: RE: "two campers allowed their dogs off lead one of which followed me... ...Shame rules can't be upheld." I completely agree with you. I remind people in the welcome emails to keep their dogs on a lead, but I accept that it needs more enforcing from me, as we sometimes have young children staying here and my risk assessments indicate that dogs must be on a lead at all times to lower the potential risk to children, (as well as to my 2 cats and my 3 chickens!) , which potentially could happen if the lead rules aren’t upheld. So yes I will certainly keep reminding people to: “Please always keep your dog on a lead at all times”. But at the end of the day, people unfortunately seem think that sometimes their dog needs more freedom, which is very a tough thing for me to check 24/7. But yes, I agree, people definitely need to keep to their dog on a lead rules at all times.

Local attractions

Hills Farm is an great base for exploring the Suffolk coastline, with indie boutiques in cobbled streets and restaurants on the pier in the cute seaside town of Southwold (15 minutes’ drive), and an extensive sandy beach backed by dunes at Walberswick (10 minutes). Aldeburgh (20 minutes) is home to famous literary and music festivals, plus bracing strolls on the pebble beach and a renowned fish and chip shop. There’s plenty of history in these parts too, with stately part-medieval Orford Castle (25 minutes) open for tours of its angular keep, and you can follow a spectacular walk around the walls at Framlingham Castle (20 minutes). The star of the show here, however, might just be the Anglo-Saxon burial ground and museum showcasing its priceless, golden finds at Sutton Hoo (half an hour). Getting out and about in glorious and unspoilt countryside is easy too, with boardwalks crossing the heathland at National Trust-owned Dunwich Heath and Beach (15 minutes). At the famous RSPB Minsmere coastal reserve (20 minutes), you have the chance to spot otters in reedbed pools, with rare bitterns and avocets nesting nearby.
