Hedging around the pitches

  • Simple pitches among meadows and woods in the Suffolk countryside
  • A 15-minute drive from Newmarket; half an hour from Cambridge
  • Part of a 70-acre farm with beef and seasonal veg for sale
Fresh air, fine views and, well, freedom – they’re all here at Freedom Farm, a 70-acre site in the Suffolk countryside about 15 minutes’ drive from Newmarket. What does freedom mean here? Well, it might be the freedom to wander along quiet footpaths that run through and around the farm, to chill out in your hammock in the woods, or perhaps just to set up your camping chair, put your feet up, crack open a drink and admire the views – on a clear day they stretch out for about 12 miles. This eco-friendly site is part of a pasture farm with Dexter cows grazing on the grass and various vegetables growing – and you’ll be able to get a taste of all that with beef and veg usually available to buy (depending on the season). You may like to bring or hire a firepit for evenings on site – the lack of light pollution means you’ll often get some great stargazing here. And if it’s not outdoor weather, you can always head off to one of the local pubs (there are several within a couple of miles); walk to them if you wish. The aim of this site is to provide a properly peaceful rural experience – and with that in mind, facilities have been kept on the simple side. That means you’ll have access to wifi and toilets (including an accessible one) but no showers.

Local attractions

When you’re not roaming along local footpaths, what might you get up to? Well, how about starting in Newmarket (15 minutes’ drive) for the racecourse and National Horse Racing Museum? Saffron Walden and Bury St Edmunds (both half an hour) are also great towns to have a wander around. Out here in the countryside, city life may feel pretty far away – but in fact it’s only a half-hour drive to Cambridge, surely one of the loveliest of all England’s cities. Once you’re there you might like to cycle between the colleges, go punting along the River Cam or check out the Fitzwilliam Museum and Cambridge Science Centre. Add a bit more history to the mix with outings to places like National Trust - Anglesey Abbey, Gardens and Lode Mill (20 minutes) and the grand Audley End House and Gardens (half an hour). Bottisham Airfield Museum (20 minutes) and Boydells Dairy Farm (40 minutes) might be worth checking out too, especially if you’ve brought the kids.
