  • Dog-friendly site on the historic grounds of RAF Leiston, Suffolk
  • Leiston town five minutes’ drive; Aldeburgh 15 minutes
  • On-site bar; playground; tennis courts and golf practice range
Accommodation with a side of deliciousness? Why on earth not. If you’re into the idea, head to the heavenly sounding Cakes and Ale Holiday Park, a peaceful site five minutes’ drive from the Suffolk coast. The ales (and cheeky G&Ts) flow liberally at the light-filled on-site pub. The Yoxford Boys Bar is named after the 357th Fighter Group, which was stationed right here – that’s right: Cakes and Ale sits on the historic grounds of RAF Leiston, a World War II airfield. That chapter of history is underlined further by the model plane in front of the reception building; there’s also a memorial to the soldiers who served here near the westernmost corner of the site. As for the cakes, there are a handful of bakeries and patisseries in the nearby town of Leiston (five minutes’ drive, or a half-hour walk)… Cakes and Ale stretches across 45 acres of well-tended grounds with facilities ranging from tennis courts to a golf practice range. The lawn ought to delight both the children (if they’re not into running around freely, they can also rely on a playground with an adventure course) and any four-legged companions – watch them as they take off after a well-thrown ball. A small shop in the reception area sells essentials (both food and toiletries), or you can make the short trip into Leiston for supermarkets and a handful of dining options, including fish and chips and Chinese takeaways.

Liked: Nice park with plenty of space in between vehicles. Overall 3 stars

Disliked: There were some caravans near to us where people left very early in the morning slamming doors etc not sure if they were going to work? In the caravan next door a man kept shouting and cheering at the tv while the football was on and there were 3 dogs wandering around without leads on.

FHU cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: Nice location, close to minsmere and aldeburgh, town has co-op and enough food outlets. Bar for ale, or at least lager and beer is fine. No cake. Pitches are adequate, water and grey drainage, level and spacious. Staff helpful, sorted out a problem. Shower/toilet block ok, clean and tidy but showers themselves need a bit of maintaining, limescale means fittings failing. No food, but as the town fairly close not a particular problem.

Disliked: Some noisy people, quiet after 9 in theory but people calling dogs at 11 pm and inebriated laughing. That's just people being antisocial and difficult to police. So meh. WiFi charges if you use it. In C21 who does?

Liked: Pitches were a great size . Lovely park. Friendly staff. Great facilities for children. Lovely clean toilets and showers. Site well maintained.

Disliked: No restaurant on site, had to drive out to eat . We like to walk but pubs not within walking distance. The on site shop could be better stocked , had to drive out if needed anything .

Liked: Great layout, friendly staff, very good and clean toilet block. Layout out of the pitches felt very spacious.

Disliked: Very little. Bar was good but it would be nice if they stocked real ale and served some food.

FHU cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: I visited for the weekend with my 11 year old granddaughter. Friendly reception. Lovely site, very tidy and lots of open grassed areas with trees and flowers. Great lay out of pitches that had both EHU and water per pitch. Bar area was nice with seating areas inside and out, prices ok. Lots of games, books or dvds to borrow. Table tennis and boules also available here. We thought the little museum onsite was interesting. Facilities were lovely, shower rooms brilliant with nice hot showers. Location of site is great and lots to explore in the area. We hired a canoe at Thorpeness Mere, went to the beach and a walk around to see the house in the clouds. Only an hours drive away for me so would visit again.

Disliked: Only spoiler for us, which was not the sites fault, was a noisy family near us going on until around 11pm on our last night, despite the quiet time policy. They were probably just having fun but noise does travel!

Local attractions

Take a long stroll through Westleton Heath National Nature Reserve (10 minutes’ drive) and explore purple heather-covered dunes stretching as far as Dunwich Heath and Beach. Meanwhile, RSPB Minsmere ought to appeal to wildlife enthusiasts, who might catch sight of avocets and – if they’re in luck – the occasional otter. Aldeburgh (15 minutes) has a pebbly beach dotted with fishermen’s boats and anchored at its northern end by The Scallop, a large shell installation in honour of local resident Benjamin Britten. Inland, the Red House, where Britten lived from 1957, displays artefacts and scores of the composer. Christchurch Mansion, on the edge of Ipswich’s leafy Christchurch Park, houses decorative art collections, as well as paintings by Suffolk artists Thomas Gainsborough and John Constable. After your visit, head for cocktails and dinner on the revamped waterfront, and maybe catch a show at the Regent Theatre.
