Primitive grass and earth tent campsite (woodland)

Liked: This reasonably remote site is great. I am really impressed with the business model of a small number of very well spaced pitches. The trees and bushes surrounding each pitch give you a great sense of privacy. There is very little light pollution for the region so stargazing especially enjoyable It’s a short walk to the water front.

Disliked: The bins maybe could be set up to facilitate recycling.

Badger Sett primitive grass and earth tent campsite (Private restroom amenities, premium, water view)

Liked: The site is large and hidden away from the other sites at the bottom of the track so you should get no one walking past most of the time …. Toilet was spotless and not at all what we thought for a composting loo lol …… the views are stunning and if your lucky as we were the sunsets are awesome……. We only had a couple of days but loved the chilled vibe while we were here

Disliked: The site would be improved with electricity simply because in winter it would be cold as the wind does blow up here and even on a day when it’s sunny in the shade it can be chilly…… so winter camping you would need a heater in the tent …… and decent lighting for the long nights - other than that no complaints just a hint lol

Local attractions

Alton Water Sports Centre is set in 400 acres of countryside, where you can wander walking and cycling tracks, go fishing and try out watersports on the reservoir. All equipment, as well as bikes, can be hired at the sports centre. Suffolk Ski Centre (both 15 minutes’ drive) also has some high-octane activities, from snowboarding to skiing on the dry ski slope. More gentle local pursuits might include visiting National Trust-owned attractions including Pin Mill (10 minutes), the setting for Arthur Ransome’s ‘Swallows and Amazons’ on the Orwell estuary, and Flatford Mill (half an hour) in Constable Country, an area with glorious trails for hiking and cycling alongside the river Stour. Spoil well-behaved kids with a day out among the rare-breed animals and reptiles at Jimmy’s Farm and Wildlife Park (20 minutes), where you can also set them up with experiences like anteater-feeding sessions. And if everybody’s keen to get down to the waterside, you can walk to Harkstead river beach directly from the campsite in 15 minutes – but remember to check the tide times.
