  • Peaceful rural site on a smallholding three miles from Halesworth
  • 25 minutes' drive from the seaside town of Southwold
  • Barbecue area, picnic tables and occasional live music on site
Pick a pitch at Paradise Barn Camping and Caravanning and you’ll most likely have some rather beastly neighbours… rabbits, deer and pheasants are among the wild visitors often spotted here, and you may well also hear a bit of chat from the resident barn owl. They’re attracted to this 14-acre Suffolk smallholding by the quiet country setting, the well-kept gardens and lack of noisome passing traffic. Those aspects tend to be pretty appealing to humanfolk too, as are the spacious pitches and the dark skies, which make an excellent backdrop to a fine evening round the campfire. Going with that peaceful territory is easy access to a network of quiet rural roads for leisurely walks or bike rides (you can make the 10-mile journey to Flixton or Bungay without clapping eyes on a main road) and a clutch of country pubs, including a couple in Halesworth, three miles away. Fishing folks may fancy trying their luck at the trout lake next door or taking a trip on the site’s sea fishing boat from Lowestoft, 20 miles away. Evenings on site tend to be fairly chilled affairs, as guests gather round the barbecues and picnic tables for their alfresco feasts, although occasionally there’s live music and other entertainment to get the party going.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: Friendly owner, field was well maintained.

Disliked: Shower could have been better, water was hot but showerhead was poor and no shower curtain meant water went all over the floor and into my shoes. Nothing to dry hands on after washing them.

Liked: Beautiful peaceful retreat. So quiet with wonderful rural lane walks through countryside. Host was absolutely lovely and invited us to his family bbq and we joined in with the live music. It is very rural and an hours walk to nearest pub but this is one of its charms. Without dogs it meant we could relax without any barking

Disliked: Only thing i would say is that if it had been full up their are only 3 showers working.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: Small site, adults only and a good sized pitch

Disliked: We were one of 4 pitches in the middle of the field, would have preferred a pitch around the edge. Shower ran out of water half way through.

Liked: Great site very flat and spacious allocated pitches. Toilets and showers were of a good standard and the site was very peaceful. The owners arranged a BBQ and entertainment for the Sunday of the bank holiday weekend, which was great fun and very friendly. Good music very well sung by Janet, and plentiful BBQ cooked by Alan, the owners of the site. Very friendly site - would definitely visit again.

Liked: Lovely quiet site, lady at reception seemed nice but other than booking in; didn’t really deal with her. Facilities were good, basic but adequate and had good size pitches.

Disliked: Only downside is that the toilets don’t have any hand dryers/ hand towels.

We arrived a day later than our friends but a neighbouring pitch had been saved for us. Site lovely and quiet . No shop but towns nearby. Only one male and female toilet/shower but this didn't cause us any issues and I believe is being rectified in the future . Primitive grass campsite

Liked: Great location set back from the road so it was lovely and quiet. There was big spaces between the pitches so we had plenty of privacy and felt able to play music without disturbing anyone. It was great that we were able to have a fire pit too!

Disliked: Some of the toilets didn’t have paper and the shower soaks the floors but really minimal issues for how cheap the site was

Local attractions

You don’t need to stray too far from Paradise Barn to find things to fill your days – as well as the trout lake next door there’s coarse fishing a mile away, and with a drive of 10 minutes or so you can be visiting the Halesworth Airfield Memorial Museum, playing a round at the local golf course or meeting the residents of Oasis Camel Park. Those fond of a tipple or two may like to take a half-hour wander over to Valley Farm Vineyards, where you can take a tour and sample some of their latest vintages. Those who prefer a pint should make a beeline for the Adnams brewery in Southwold, where you’ll see the brewing process in action before honing your beer drinking skills with a tutored tasting. Southwold’s also got a fab beach and an excellent pier with some classic seaside fun to be had at the Wacky Walk of Mirrors and the Under the Pier Show. For more watery days out, head to Beccles, half an hour away by car, to hire a boat for a day of pottering around the Norfolk Broads.
