  • Shepherd's hut on a farm five minutes' drive from Bury St Edmunds
  • An hour's drive to the Suffolk coast; 15 minutes to Lavenham
  • Space for your own tent to sleep children; farm produce sold on site
The peaceful atmosphere of the countryside or the convenience of a town location? Or… both at the same time? The shepherd's hut at Apple Tree Farm Camping is one of those wonderful places that manages to tick both boxes – it’s just next door to Nowton Park Country Park, in the Suffolk countryside, and yet it's only a five-minute drive from the centre of Bury St Edmunds. That handy location means you'll easily be able to pop out for supermarket supplies, meals out, takeaways and the like, while still spending your nights in a laidback rural setting (with easy access from the main road, just to give it that extra layer of convenience). Despite being so close to town, this is a proper countryside setting, on a farm with all sorts of animals, including alpacas, sheep, chickens and miniature horses. As there are farm animals in the adjacent fields, dogs are only permitted if they're very well behaved. The shepherd's hut has its own toilet and shower, and sleeps two people, with extra space outside to set up a tent for the kids to sleep in. A secure parking space is also adjacent, so your car can be kept close at hand. You’re welcome to bring along a barbecue for your outdoor meals; there are various bits of farm produce for sale, including fresh eggs, honey, venison and other seasonal offerings.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Owner was really kind and showed my daughter and our friends children the animals and gave opportunity for feeding and collecting eggs. If you want to camp as close to bury st Edmunds as possible in a no fuss situation this is ideal.

Local attractions

Your first outing may well be just next door to Nowton Park Country Park, where you can stretch your legs in 200 acres of lovely landscapes, including ponds and arboretums, play football or take the kids to the play area and maze. There’s a fair amount of wildlife to see around the park too, although avid birdwatchers will probably want to take off to RSPB Minsmere (an hour's drive away) at some point. If birding isn't your thing, there are plenty of other excellent options for days out on the Suffolk coast – the seaside towns of Aldeburgh and Southwold are both a little over an hour's drive away. For riverside views instead, try Dedham Vale National Landscape (40 minutes). Closer to home, Bury St Edmunds (five minutes’ drive/45 minutes’ walk) has a lovely historic town centre with a cathedral, a twice-weekly market and tours of the Greene King brewery. Other towns worth visiting nearby include Lavenham (15 minutes), Newmarket (25 minutes) and Ipswich (half an hour).
