  • Family-friendly site in the grounds of a traditional Suffolk pub
  • Well-placed base for exploring Suffolk Heritage Coast
  • A 10-minute drive from Southwold’s lighthouse, pier, famed beach huts
Does rambling the Suffolk coastline with your best (canine) friend in tow and rounding out days with a few quiet pints down the local sound like everything you’d want from your hols? The Five Bells Inn (a family- and dog-friendly pub campsite 10 minutes’ walk from the Wrentham in Suffolk) might be just what you’re looking for. Five Bells is a top base for getting to know the coastlines of Southwold and Walberswick, and for exploring the Suffolk Heritage Coast. Pick up the Suffolk Coast Path 15 minutes’ walk from the site, start the Sandlings Walk in Southwold, a 10-minute drive away, or – if you’d prefer your wanderings to stretch further afield – make the 20-minute journey to the Norfolk Broads. Once you’ve worked up an appetite, swing back to site to ring up a meal (geddit?) and knock back a drink in the Five Bells Inn – as well as the usual, the pub serves local beers, gins and vodkas from Southwold’s Adnams (drop by the brewery and distillery, 10 minutes away, for a tour and tasting). And you won’t have to leave Rex tied up back at your pitch while you eat – the Five Bells Inn is dog-friendly, so bring him along for a family evening. If you’d rather take care of yourself, fire up the barbecue and grill some goodies from the supermarket in Southwold or try out one of the restaurants within 15 minutes of the Five Bells.

Local attractions

Set aside a day or two of your Five Bells Inn getaway for mooching around Southwold, one of the jewels in the Suffolk Heritage Coast crown. A 10-minute drive from the site, it’s a must-visit for its scenic pier, lighthouse and the beach huts that are waiting to make their appearance on your ‘Gram. Southwold isn’t the only coastal town within half an hour worth a visit: a trip to Lowestoft comes highly recommended for its famous lighthouse, its museum of treasures and Ness Point, the most easterly point in England (and home to Gulliver – just ask a local), and the fairytale fantasy village of Thorpeness, with its Peter Pan boating lake and House in the Clouds, should prove to be a draw for the kids. There’s plenty else to keep the kids entertained too: Africa Alive! walking safari zoo is five minutes from Five Bells, little petrol heads will have their need for speed fulfilled at Ellough Park Kart Circuit, 10 minutes away, and Pleasurewood Hills theme park should get the adrenaline pumping after a 20-minute drive. Craving adult adventures? Head to UK Parachuting for some daredevilry or time your stay just right to coincide with Latitude Festival, both 10 minutes from Five Bells.
