Quality over quantity is the ethos at award-winning rural Norfolk site Dower House Touring Park, 40 minutes’ drive from Norwich. With sizeable grounds but limited numbers on site you can be assured of spacious pitches with plenty of room for all your kit and lots of breathing space. And you’ll be wanting to breathe pretty deeply at this splendid woodland site – it’s right on the edge of Thetford Forest Park, with mature trees all around the pitches and direct access to the forest for such things as long peaceful walks (grownups) or building dens (kids… although no one’s stopping you…) So far, so peaceful – but there’s activity on hand too should you want it. All guests have the use of a free heated open-air pool (open from the end of May), a playground and an activity area with badminton/volleyball net, a cricket area and football goals (these last few are all collected together in an area with log benches that often prove handy for parents tasked with supervising/refereeing). All this, and a pub too… The site’s own hostelry opens up in busier periods for food and drink (plus TV watching and games of pool); if you’re going down the self-catering route you’ll also have access to a dishwashing room and a freezer for ice blocks; other amenities on site include a laundry room and modern bathroom blocks with accessible facilities and a baby bath/changing room.

Local attractions

Once you’ve taken a few wanders or bike rides around Thetford Forest, set off for riverside rambles or picnics (with paddling should you wish) at Knettishall Heath nature reserve (10 minutes’ drive) or take to the treetops to see it from above at Go Ape Thetford (25 minutes). You may see some local wildlife as you roam, but for rather larger beasts you’ll need to head to the World Horse Welfare park at Hall Farm or get up close to the critters at Banham Zoo – both are about 15 minutes away by car. For manmade attractions, get set for speedy times with races and driving experiences at Snetterton Circuit (15 minutes) or something a little more laidback at Bressingham Steam & Gardens (20 minutes). And if you like a tipple or two you can’t miss the chance to visit England’s oldest whisky distillery, St George’s Distillery (10 minutes). If you fancy a change of scenery from all the rural goings-on, take urban days out strolling the cobbled streets of Norwich (40 minutes) or punting your way between the colleges of Cambridge (50 minutes).
