  • Adults-only back to nature site in a quiet rural setting
  • Seaside towns, theme park and safari park all a short drive away
  • Choose your own pitch next to the beck, under trees or in the open
Setting off for a break in the Norfolk countryside? Pitch up on a plot at The Old Sun, a back to nature site that sits prettily right on the Norfolk/Suffolk border, among the peaceful setting of the Waveney Valley. When you arrive you'll be happy to hear that you can chose your own pitch either in the open field, down by the gently flowing beck or under the shade of the mature trees that line the field. All the pitches at The Old Sun are set on well-drained gently sloping grass, and there's plenty of space for your large awning or tent, so no need to skimp on your camping gear before setting off on your hols. While there is a free wifi service available here to keep you connected with the outside world, this is a remote and peaceful back to basics site that places a real emphasis on maintaining a connection with the countryside, so this means no mains electricity and no toilets or showers – so don't forget to bring your own chemical toilet to use with the site's disposal facilities – all the better for a properly relaxing, off-grid rural retreat on the edge of the Norfolk Broads. For off-site eating options there are several restaurants, cafés and takeaways within half a mile, as well as a shop for all your sausagey supplies within a mile of The Old Sun. And fitness fanatics, fear not – those with an unbreakable routine can avail of the gym facilities and indoor pool two miles away.

Local attractions

The Old Sun is a great base from which to explore Norfolk and Suffolk, and you're an easy 30 minutes' drive from Norwich, the Norfolk Broads and the coast. If golf's your game, then there's a course within a couple of miles. Fishing fanatics are also in luck here: Broome Pits, right next to The Old Sun, is open 24/7 and made up of four lakes filled to the brim with bream and tench, as well as carp weighing up to (and sometimes over) 40lbs, plus heaps of roach, rudd and other small fish. Pick up your permit at the lakes for long days of dawn to dusk fishing. Hire a bike or boat at a centre a couple of miles from base, and hot foot it over to Norwich city centre for at least a couple of days’ worth of attractions, from shopping in The Lanes and the covered market to visiting the Norman Norwich Castle or spotting the resident peregrine falcons at the city's spectacular cathedral. Pubs, clubs, award-winning restaurants, theatres and live music venues abound around this vibrant university city, so there's no end to the options you've got for city-based fun. If you're not one for cycling or boating, however, but still want to lap up what Norwich has to entertain you with, then you can hop on a Norwich-bound bus at a stop that lies 100 metres from the site's entrance. Now, onto the Norfolk/Suffolk coast, which at its closest point lies a measly 13 miles from base. You'll no doubt have a great old time if you hit up Great Yarmouth's pleasure beach, and for even more family-orientated fun, Pleasurewood Hills theme park and a sprawling Africa-themed safari park both lie within easy reach of Lowestoft's seaside attractions.
