  • Camping field next to the beach at Sea Palling in Norfolk
  • A 20-minute drive to Hickling Broad, and 25 to BeWilderwood Norfolk
  • Direct access to a sandy beach; pubs and cafés five minutes’ drive
Small and just steps away from a splendid beach, The Acre is close to Sea Palling, on the north coast of Norfolk, about 40 minutes' drive from Norwich. Once you’ve pitched up in the level meadow, the only thing that separates you from the sandy beach and the man-made coastal reefs is a stroll through the dunes covered in marram grasses. It's a very peaceful setup here – the camping pitches are lined with conifers to one side and have rural views over the fields. This is a place where it pays to keep your eye on nature, perhaps watching the sand martins flit around, seeing the sun rise or spotting muntjac deer roaming the countryside. Cars are parked in the top half of the field, away from the pitches, to keep everything safe and quiet. As this is pretty much wild camping, facilities on site are basic, with two showers and flushing toilets, plus a washing-up area. To add to the back-to-nature vibe, there’s no electricity, so it’s a good idea to bring torches to find your way around at night. Now back to that beach. It’s a fabulous spot for swimmers, birdwatchers, walkers, kitesurfers, surfers, jetskiers and divers alike, with plenty of space for kids (and dogs, if you're bringing the pets) to run off energy on the dunes. When you need to refuel, there are some good pubs and cafés within five minutes’ drive.

Local attractions

No need to drive to the seaside – Sea Palling beach is accessed on foot in less than five minutes. Simply follow the boardwalk across the dunes and – hey presto – you’re there. But it’s by no means the only local sandy spot. Head for Waxham (five minutes’ drive) or Horsey Gap beaches (15 minutes) for the chance to spot seals lolling in the waves, or tire everyone out playing chase on the long stretch of beach at Mundesley (25 minutes). Kids still going strong? Try them on the rope swings and treetop walks at BeWilderwood Norfolk (25 minutes), get them looking for barn owls and kingfishers on walks at Hickling Broad (20 minutes), or treat them to a cruise on a wooden boat through the waterways at Horsey Mere (15 minutes). Climb to the top of National Trust-owned Horsey Windpump (15 minutes) for apparently endless views over the flat landscapes of Norfolk, and get up high again when you visit red-and-white striped Happisburgh Lighthouse (10 minutes), with views over the beach and North Sea from its lookout deck.
