  • On a racecourse by the River Wensum, a 20-minute walk from Fakenham
  • Sandringham Estate half an hour; Norwich 55 minutes
  • Horse races; sports complex with golf, bar and restaurant
Fakenham Racecourse Camping and Caravan Site is a first-rate spot well worth galloping to for stays on well-maintained grass lawns. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly, making it a top spot for unwinding among the greenery of secluded gardens. The location is a real draw, since it’s a 20-minute walk from Fakenham’s town centre, and it takes only about 10 minutes to wander down to the River Wensum for access to excellent walking and cycling routes through rural countryside. It’s a 25-minute drive to Blakeney, in the stunning Norfolk Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, home to vast sandy beaches and the jumping-off point for seal-watching boat trips. Not too fussed about exploring? Simply kick back on site while the kids and dogs nosey about in the grass areas. If you’re here for the racing, meets are organised from October to June; guests are more than welcome to stay overnight while they’re on (but they will need to move from their pitch to the centre of the course on the day of the event). Those who don’t have any enthusiasm for equestrianism can amuse themselves at the on-site Gallow Sports Centre’s nine-hole golf course, tennis court and squash court instead. There’s also a bar and restaurant for refuelling. Guests who stay for at least a couple of nights during a race meeting will get a free badge for the event. Bikes can be securely kept at the site.

Powered grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: Lovely clean facilities, heated at this time of year which was comfortable. Friendly staff.

Disliked: A very loud event taking place closeby on Saturday night, would check if planning to stay again if this might be a regular thing. Noisy until 2am

Powered grass tent campsite

Liked: The space, the choice of facilities (2 blocks of showers and toilets which were really clean and new! The showers were hot and had 3 wet rooms which were amazing with kids!!), lots of parking, a no noise past 10pm policy (which everyone respected!), hearing owls in the night, drinking taps everywhere, easy walk into town (8 mins to Wetherspoons and shops), large Tesco & Morrisons within 3 miles - to buy the bits you forgot! You are surrounded by fields and we saw baby deer a few times each day. Everything is so spread out that even if it was full, it would still feel spacious.

Disliked: Some of the non-electric pitches at the top of our field looked quiet small (you would have to park your car at the start of the field, but that's the only slight negative thing I can think of.

Powered grass tent campsite

Liked: The open space. The facilities which were clean and well maintained. The communal fridge and freezer were very handy. The walks into the local area were lovely. Staff were friendly

Disliked: The play field and the dog walking field were just 2 open fields which wasn't really as we felt they were advertised. Dogs had to stay on lead and the playing field could have done with some goals at the least or a swing/climbing frame. WiFi was very intermittent.

Powered grass tent campsite

Liked: Very clean site with easy access to electrical points and good space between pitches. We came with a group and were pitched next too or close.

Disliked: Unfortunately on the morning and evening before leaving the showers were very cold and not warming up. The reception wasn’t open so unable to let anyone know. Pitches need levelling in places where ground has been raised.

Liked: Plenty of space to pitch your tent, toilet and shower facilities were clean. Staff were able to allow us to pitch together as a group.

Disliked: Arriving outside of check in times so instructions are to email or call to inform staff. One of the numbers is out of service, the other kept ringing with no response. Some areas of the pitch were uneven.

Liked: Really laid back site no endless rules like some, so could just relax, us and everyone else respectful, so, fabulous. Even with a good few tents/caravans up late no one too loud, easy breezy. I have a huge spider phobia so toilets/showers when camping are always a concern for me, not here, nice modern block and I didn't see one! Showers were warm and continuous rather than constantly needing to press a button which was awesome. There is a huge games field so kids with footballs or rounders can have fun without disturbing tents. Distance to town centre is 15min walk or 5 minute drive (supermarkets, shops, fast food etc. a plenty and market day is Thursday). I didn't see a shop on site but so close to town it didn't matter. Also distance to beaches is 25-45mins, dependent on beach (recommend West Runton for crabbing and sea with lifeguards - though stoney - and Blakeney - for the seals). Watching the sunset from the tent field is awesome. Site felt very safe. Loads of well behaved dogs on site including our own, so clearly a very dog friendly site too.

Disliked: Whilst the games field is awesome nothing else for kids, one playground would make a huge difference. There were very few showers and only 2 sinks to wash up. Needed to queue occasionally but not for long. I wouldn't say this is a dislike but if site had been at capacity it could have been. Tent field to toilets is a bit of a walk.

Local attractions

Surrounded by the lush woodland of Sandringham Country Park, Sandringham Estate (half an hour’s drive) is the Royal Family’s beloved Christmas retreat. The elegant rooms of the Jacobean mansion are decorated with splendid tapestries and paintings, while the gardens include a topiary area and ornamental lakes. The tall spire of Norwich Cathedral (55 minutes) dominates the city and is home to nesting peregrine falcons. The church is also renowned for its splendid cloister, with Gothic arches around a green with a paved labyrinth that’s a top spot for a little spiritual meditation. More stillness can be found at the Plantation Garden, with secluded benches and flower-lined paths A great way to explore the Broads National Park (one hour) is by canoe or kayak. As you glide through wetlands and peat bogs, keep your eyes peeled for resident wildlife such as cranes and herons – plus, if you’re lucky, the occasional otter.
