  • On a racecourse by the River Wensum, a 20-minute walk from Fakenham
  • Sandringham Estate half an hour; Norwich 55 minutes
  • Bar, golf, squash and tennis on site; horse-racing events on occasion
Fakenham Racecourse Camping and Caravan Site is well worth galloping to for stays on well-maintained grass lawns. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly, making it a top spot for unwinding among the greenery of secluded gardens. The location is a real draw, since it’s a 20-minute walk from Fakenham’s town centre, and it only takes about 10 minutes to wander down to the River Wensum to access excellent walking and cycling routes through the countryside. It’s a 25-minute drive to Blakeney in the stunning Norfolk Coast National Landscape, home to vast sandy beaches and the jumping-off point for seal-watching boat trips. Not too fussed about exploring? Kick back on site while the kids and dogs nosey about in the grass areas. If you’re here for the racing, meets are organised from October to June; guests are more than welcome to stay overnight while they’re on (but they will need to move from their pitch to a designated area by 9am on the day of the event). Those who don’t have any enthusiasm for equestrianism can amuse themselves at the on-site Gallow Sports Centre’s nine-hole golf course, tennis court and squash court instead. There’s also a bar on site. Guests who stay for at least a couple of nights during a race meeting will get complimentary tickets into the races. Bikes can be securely kept at the site.

Powered grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: Pitch 44 was lovely - level grass, hedges for shelter and privacy, close to toilet block.
Toilets and showers were super clean, spacious, and the showers were fabulously hot and powerful.
Washing up room is indoors with two sinks and plenty of worktop space, plus a fridge and a freezer.
Walk into town took about 15 minutes max.

Disliked: I love hearing/seeing the local wildlife, but be aware that crows
are noisy birds and love gobbing off at dawn! Only other negative can think of is the toilet door bangs very loudly, which woke me up at night.

Powered cement/asphalt travel trailer campsite

Liked: Spacious pitches, clean & close to Cromer, Hunstanton & Wells (all within half hour drive).

Disliked: The key for toilets. When there are 4 of you and 1 takes key, it means others can't go yo loo if they need to & have to wait.

Liked: Pitch sizes were very big. Site wasn't overcrowded. Great amenities. Friendly and helpful staff.

Disliked: The doors to the toilet block next to caravan field banged constantly all day and night. A sign to say 'please close quietly' might be good.

Quite a few piles of dog poo around too.

Powered cement/asphalt travel trailer campsite

Liked: Well laid out site - easy to find pitches as numbers clearly marked. Great for a walk into Fakenham Town. Would imagine it’s packed on Race days and a fab location for this and the golf course.

Disliked: When arrived just a welcome pack and nobody in the office. The pack gave some information but not all. The WC and showers were in a specific block but these weren’t apparent from the small map we were given. The toilets we found wouldn't open with the fob we were given. We walked into town and when we came back we did go to reception and was told the toilets were in the Prince of Wales block - if this had been stated in the welcome pack this would have been so much better.

Toilets and shower block was fine but definitely not the best I’ve used.

Not a big thing, but we had booked a grass pitch but the pitch we were given was hard standing. Again not a problem for 1 night as we didn’t intend putting up our awning anyway.

Heard some gunshots nearby which was a bit off putting and someone else on the site said it was someone lamping! (I had to google that as never heard of it!)

Powered grass tent campsite

Liked: It was away from main roads, the staff were really nice and helpful even when he had a problem I’ll discuss in the disliked, the toilets were cleaned daily and the information pack provided was great, especially labelling specifically the dog friendly places as we had brought the dog!

Disliked: The crows… I know it’s not the campsites fault specifically but there’s loads of trees and hundreds of crows that like to wake up at 4am, I now understand why they’re called a murder as it’s all they do! We asked to move after the first night as we were placed right underneath the crow trees, which they were helpful with, but maybe see about getting rid of them as they caused lack of sleep. Also the toilets were the furthest away from the tent pitches which meant a trek in the middle of the night for the loo, caravans all parked close by…

Local attractions

Surrounded by the lush woodland of Sandringham Country Park, Sandringham Estate (half an hour’s drive) is the Royal Family’s beloved Christmas retreat. The elegant rooms of the Jacobean mansion are decorated with splendid tapestries and paintings, while the gardens include a topiary area and ornamental lakes. The tall spire of Norwich Cathedral (55 minutes) dominates the city and is home to nesting peregrine falcons. The church is also renowned for its splendid cloister, with Gothic arches around a green with a paved labyrinth that’s a top spot for a little spiritual meditation. More stillness can be found at the Plantation Garden, with secluded benches and flower-lined paths A great way to explore the Broads National Park (one hour) is by canoe or kayak. As you glide through wetlands and peat bogs, keep your eyes peeled for resident wildlife such as cranes and herons – plus, if you’re lucky, the occasional otter.
