  • Simple site at a country park with rural walks all around
  • In Cambridgeshire countryside bordered by the River Nene
  • Bordering the villages of Yarwell and Nassington
After a calm spot in the Cambridgeshire countryside? Make tracks to the pitches at Yarwell Mill Country Park, on the banks of the River Nene and close to some great spots for walks and watersports. Facilities here are hassle-free: toilets are well lit at night, and there's also a washing-up area. The village of Yarwell is on the edge of the park for real ale and pub grub at the Angel Inn; for self-catering supplies, there are plenty of shops in Stamford (15 minutes' drive) and Peterborough (20 minutes).

Liked: Beautiful location in nature. There are attractive villages with a historical background nearby. Proximity to Stamford.

Disliked: The toilets, shower rooms and washing up rooms were not clean and therefore unpleasant to use.

Liked: Receptionist helpful and friendly. Quiet site, wash rooms good.

Disliked: I couldn’t find fish washing facilities. I stayed at four sites this week. Yarwell Mill was the most expensive.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: The site was very clean and welcoming. It was lovely to be near the river, although we did not participate in water activities it was nice to watch people enjoy themselves in the river doing different activities. I did not rate the WiFi or whether it was children friendly because these ratings did not apply to me.

Liked: The weather. There had been excellent communication and we were greeted by a very friendly lady but it was downhill from there. Flat pitch.

Disliked: What a disappointment. Our first trip out in our half converted van and the site was a real let down. The toilet block was far too small to accommodate the number of people staying - thank goodness it was less than half full. I cannot imagine what it would be like full season. The cubicles were filthy; toilet seats broken; cobwebs that must have been there since last summer; no equipment to wipe the floors after showering - so the next person got a messy room; no toilet paper in the majority of cubicles; shower drains blocked, black and slimy, and out of their holes. A fellow camper had tried to complain to be told they had been having difficulty getting maintenance staff. We had booked so that we could use the fishing facilities but had no luck finding how and where to do this and when we researched we found out that it wasn't even fishing season - something the site had neglected to tell us. There is building going on so the roads in were broken and dirty - which I knew - but they should really have though about this and maybe reduced the price as it really was an unsightly mess. Needless to say this is not somewhere we shall be returning to.

From the manager: Hello, Thank you for taking the time to write a review of your stay here with us at Yarwell Mill. With regards to the cleanliness I do sincerely apologise, we were let down by our cleaning company at last minute which did result in the situation you described. With regards to fishing I'm afraid that at present due to maintenance around the lake we are unable for safety reasons to allow fishing on our lake. I'm afraid that we are not responsible to regulations around river fishing - this should be checked yourselves. We are a developing site and whilst the roads around the camping site do need work this is all part of our plan. Kind regars,

Local attractions

Bring your boots: the countryside surrounding Yarwell Mill and Yarwell village is packed with scenic walks and quiet villages to explore, including Wansford and Nassington, and the historic town of Stamford is six miles away with its timber-framed buildings, medieval churches and 17th- and 18th-century stone buildings to point the camera at. The 117-mile Nene Way passes through Peterborough and also takes in the ancient market town of Oundle, 12 miles to the south west; the Sulehay Nature Reserve, covering walks around the ancient forest of Sulehay, the Stonepit Quarry and the woods and fields of Ring Haw is just to the west of Yarwell (there’s some parking at the entrance to the forest on the Wansford to Yarwell road). For resting your feet, jump onto the Nene Valley Steam Railway, which has been puffing along since 1845 and which runs for seven and a half miles along the river; join it at Wansford for the girder bridge trip across the Nene or go loco and book a Driver Experience. Then track along to the historic village of Fotheringhay, said by a historian to have ‘been distinguished beyond any other place in Britain, except the Capital, by the aggravated misfortunes of Royalty’; Mary Queen of Scots and Elizabethan Elizabeth are just two blue-blooded types associated with the village, although Liz was slightly luckier in that she wasn’t executed at Fotheringhay Castle. Potter in and around Peterborough too for heaps of historical highlights such as 17th-century Elton Hall, the medieval manor house Longthorpe Hall and the Grade I listed Thorpe Hall. Or, you could decide to be thoroughly contrary and modern and book a skydive at Peterborough’s Sibson Airfield.
