  • In Cambridgeshire countryside bordered by the River Nene
  • Bordering the villages of Yarwell and Nassington
After a calm spot in the Cambridgeshire countryside? Make tracks to the pitches at Yarwell Mill Country Park, on the banks of the River Nene and close to some great spots for walks and watersports. Facilities here are hassle-free: toilets are well lit at night, and there's also a washing-up area. The village of Yarwell is on the edge of the park for real ale and pub grub at the Angel Inn; for self-catering supplies, there are plenty of shops in Stamford (15 minutes' drive) and Peterborough (20 minutes).

Local attractions

Bring your boots: the countryside surrounding Yarwell Mill and Yarwell village is packed with scenic walks and quiet villages to explore, including Wansford and Nassington, and the historic town of Stamford is six miles away with its timber-framed buildings, medieval churches and 17th- and 18th-century stone buildings to point the camera at. The 117-mile Nene Way passes through Peterborough and also takes in the ancient market town of Oundle, 12 miles to the south west; the Sulehay Nature Reserve, covering walks around the ancient forest of Sulehay, the Stonepit Quarry and the woods and fields of Ring Haw is just to the west of Yarwell (there’s some parking at the entrance to the forest on the Wansford to Yarwell road). For resting your feet, jump onto the Nene Valley Steam Railway, which has been puffing along since 1845 and which runs for seven and a half miles along the river; join it at Wansford for the girder bridge trip across the Nene or go loco and book a Driver Experience. Then track along to the historic village of Fotheringhay, said by a historian to have ‘been distinguished beyond any other place in Britain, except the Capital, by the aggravated misfortunes of Royalty’; Mary Queen of Scots and Elizabethan Elizabeth are just two blue-blooded types associated with the village, although Liz was slightly luckier in that she wasn’t executed at Fotheringhay Castle. Potter in and around Peterborough too for heaps of historical highlights such as 17th-century Elton Hall, the medieval manor house Longthorpe Hall and the Grade I listed Thorpe Hall. Or, you could decide to be thoroughly contrary and modern and book a skydive at Peterborough’s Sibson Airfield.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: Toilets were lean. Very beautiful and clean site. Nice place to have a walk.

Disliked: We were at the pitch by the river. Right next to a path and so many people shortcut through our pitch (no 9) was very annoying just to save 10 seconds. With paddle boards, dogs it was just not peaceful at all. I believe it is easily public accessible as our gazebo was half way unzipped after the night and just seen so many people coming just to have a nice day by the river. Someone decided from cafe car park to leave 5.30am, all the headlights to our tent so it was bright as daytime. Not the place if you want peace and privacy unless you parked in the field.

Powered grass campsite

Liked: Great place, well kept flat grass pitches. Nice bathroom n shower set up. Some of the best I've seen. Friendly helpful staff. Great location to explore. Nice watching the geese do low flyby n land in field. (Don't look up) lol

Disliked: Need steps on camp side of toilet block. Instead of having to walk all the way round, up a ramp n back on yourself.

Powered grass campsite

Liked: Great location, ideal for Burghley Horse Trials and lovely nearby villages with good walks and local pubs.

Disliked: Toilet/showers weren’t great. Some locks didn’t work and lighting sensors broken. No method of sweeping the water away after a shower so the next person had to deal with soaking wet floors. Maybe provide a mop to help the problem? Also bunched all weekend bookings together even though clearly not full? Why not spread us out a bit so you aren’t so close to the next pitch? I wouldn’t want to be there when it’s fully booked as very close pitches.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: Very tidy and attractive camp site in a natural amphitheatre centred on the old water-driven Mill and its race on the River Nene, a part of England that I had never previously visited. I live and learn! This is a gorgeous corner of ‘Olde England’. Although I had minimal contact with the owners (arriving and departing at unsociable hours), I had the impression that they are excellent.

Disliked: I am used to a quiet rural setting so the constant night time road noise from the presumably close main road was disappointing but this is, of course quite outside the campground operator’s control.

Liked: Love the place and the scenery is great, nice to see the parachuters and the barges going up and down the kenal

Disliked: The only thing that let it down was the cleanliness off the shower/toilet rooms this year we stay here every year around the same week and this year the showers were the worst ive seen them

Liked: Riverside setting of the site is beautiful and lots of potential to get better reviews. Michelle gave great customer service.

Disliked: The touring field pitches were very soulless and too close together when there is open space to utilise better. Have read lots of negative comments re shower block and have to agree. Not enough showers etc for number of pitches. Cleaning is superficial and the whole block needs a deep clean. Consider wooden shower boards to step onto, benches and more wall hooks, mop for each person to clean floor after use.

Liked: Large open well landscape field. Flat ground which also drains fast so won’t get waterlogged. Michelle in reception super helpful. Easy booking experience.

Disliked: Large amount of geese but can’t be helped as wet land area. I have bird phobia 🤪
