  • Pick your own pitch at a 12-acre site on the banks of the River Avon
  • Warwick Castle and Royal Leamington Spa within 15 minutes' drive
  • Fishing on site (for an extra charge); farm shop/café a mile away
There are many reasons why one might fancy settling down by a river – perhaps for the fishing, the views, the wildlife… maybe even the chance to get in the water. Happily, all of the above are on the cards at Avon Wild Camping, a peaceful Warwickshire site on the banks of the River Avon 15 minutes' drive from Leamington Spa. There’s a mighty pretty stretch of the river running alongside one side of this site, making it a prime spot for kids to paddle and catch minnows in the shallows (under supervision, of course) or for grownups to pick up permits (available on site for an extra charge) to try their luck with the chub, pike, grayling, roach and brown trout that swim in the waters. It’s a popular part of the world with wildlife too, so settling down by the river with binoculars and/or a drink also comes highly recommended. All is very laidback around here: it’s a pick-your-own pitch place, with heaps of space to choose from around the 12 acres of meadow. Being a back to basics site there are no electric hookups or showers, but there is access to limited (but clean) toilet facilities. As this is an eco site, the toilets run on rain water, guests are strongly encouraged to recycle and, without wifi, the kids are free to focus on playing by the river. Alfresco meals can be cooked up at the campfire area; there are firepits and kiln-dried timber available if you need them. Pick up supplies for such things at the farm shop a mile away; it’s also got a café for coffee, cakes, pizzas and other meals if you’d rather eat out. There are several good country pubs nearby too, or you could scoot into Royal Leamington Spa (10 minutes’ drive) for more places to eat and drink.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: Staying with my young son who loved paddling in the river!

Disliked: Fire pits and logs were fantastic but could do with some bags of larger logs, rather than just off cuts.

From the manager: Thanks for your feedback, yes fire pits are free but sadly, as bags of logs are sooo expensive now, people complained more about the cost of wood, so we’ve found a low cost option at £4 per bag… you’re welcome to bring your own, B&M up the road charge £9 for a bag of kiln dried logs… (we don’t force people to buy ours)

Great site, friendly owners, we will keep returning 4****

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: Always a pleasure staying at Avon, we return often and we only live 15 mins away. Weve stayed at all times and its never too conjested, always have a big area to ourselves and pretty much always get to choose the spot. Absolutely great on Sunny days with the river for a cooldown, evenings have always been pretty tranquil with firepit going, had the odd neighbour playing music but its never been excessive or impeded on any of our trips. Toilets facilities always clean and stocked up. Some nice walks to be had in the area No wifi - love it …. Keeps the family off their devices Weve recommended Avon to several friends who have also loved it.

Disliked: Could benefit from some sort of eco shower or two maybe something similar… especially if your there for quite a few consecutive nights, there is always the river when the weathers nice but it is UK and that sun doesnt stay out long. Also optional bin disposal even if small surcharge required, i agree with taking it home but if your camping for several days those bags mount up especially if your a family or big group.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: We spent a couple of nights here at a beautiful spot next to the river under a canopy of trees and it was fabulous. We didn’t check out the facilities because we were self contained but appreciated the fact they were there in case we needed them. Booking and payment was all online, we liked the fact that from the road you wouldn’t even know the site existed, the camera at the gate is a smart idea to check who’s coming on site. We dipped our feet in the river but didn’t spend as long in it as the kids we saw who were having the best time playing on the tyre swing. This really is a fabulous place.

Disliked: Nothing to dislike.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: It’s our second time here and I really like that we can do barbeque and firepit. It’s a massive field so everyone has privacy and own space. The field looks clean and no rubbish, and there’s a river where kids can play. The toilet cubicles are all clean with loo rolls and sink.

Disliked: The road to drive in to the field is very bumpy so maybe the management can sort it.

Local attractions

The big draw around here is Warwick Castle (15 minutes’ drive) – it’s well worth a proper day out to explore the dungeons, take in the shows, get lost in the maze, see the birds of prey flying, wander through the 64 acres of the estate… oh, and visit the castle itself, of course. For something just a little less expansive, head instead to Kenilworth Castle and Elizabethan Garden (15 minutes) or stroll around the pretty Jephson Gardens in Royal Leamington Spa (10 minutes). Coventry (15 minutes) and Stratford-upon-Avon (25 minutes) are other good options for urban days out; try Ryton Pools Country Park (five minutes) or Stoneleigh Deer Golf Club (over the road) if you’d rather stay rural. If you need family days out, take bouncy kids over to the Jump In trampoline park (15 minutes), or get set for farm-based fun among the animals, play areas, funfair rides and escape rooms at Hatton Adventure World (25 minutes).
