  • Quiet site next to an old 17th-century battlefield in rural surrounds
  • On Radway’s outskirts, a 20-minute drive from Stratford-upon-Avon
  • Direct access to woodland, the Battlefields Trail and Centenary Way
Arm yourself with all the gear you need for a top trip, then march towards Applecross Fields for a stay next to the 17th-century site of the Battle of Edgehill. This Warwickshire farm park is just next to this historic spot on the edge of the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and a 20-minute drive from the equally historic Stratford-upon-Avon. Once you’ve yomped over here, pick a pitch anywhere on the four-acre field and get settled while the kids play on the grass. Dogs are welcome at this site as well and can be exercised on a lead around the farm or taken off into the countryside for walkies. Whether you’re travelling with four-legged family members or not, make sure to factor in some time for wanders on a network of footpaths and routes leading directly from the park, including around the Upton House Estate. Part of the Battlefields Trail and Centenary Way, this is a sought-after spot by historically minded folk with an interest in the English Civil War. Plenty of other activities are within a 30-minute drive, including strolls to a pub in Edgehill (around a half an hour’s walk), horse rides from the stables in the village and gun practice sessions at the Edgehill Shooting Ground (five minutes’ drive). Supplies are sorted in Banbury (20 minutes), which has a whole host of shops and restaurants, or closer by in Kineton with its local amenities, chip shop, Indian restaurant, tapas bar and pubs (10 minutes). Applecross Fields also has an on-site outdoor play group called Woods and Wellies, suitable for children up to the age of seven. It runs three mornings a week and on select weekend dates, and can be booked separately.

Primitive grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: Everything! Peaceful, back to basics camping. The location was lovely, close proximity to the village of Radway with a nice exhibition on the battle of Edgehill in the church and a mile (we took the the steep route) walk to the Castle Inn for amazing views across Edgehill. It was perfect for one night. We were the only ones there so having one composting toilet was fine and it worked brilliantly. Good communication from Annie too.

Disliked: nothing

Primitive grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: What a beautiful spot! So peaceful. We were lucky enough to be the only people on site and as a mother and 10 year old daughter felt perfectly safe, and she loved running around the field! The toilet is excellent, very clean and easy to use. We were self-contained so had everything we needed.

Disliked: Nothing. This was perfect for one night away from it all before school started again.

Primitive grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: Beautiful location in a rural setting. Amazing views, walks and very quiet and peaceful. The pitch is essentially a grass verge next to a field but I found this quite nice, it was lovely to be able to look across the field into the hills at the distance. Also like that pitches were close to water taps, rubbish drop off point etc.

Disliked: Postcode to me to a slightly different place but it does say on the pitch up page. Would have been great if the booking text confirmed this as I don’t always read the full pitch up info.

Liked: This was our first experience of caravanning. I received a warm and helpful text in the morning with all the info we needed. The site was lovely and quiet, and felt the stress fall away as soon as you entered. The composting toilet was clean and well maintained. There are some lovely walks, I really recommend walking up and along the ridge of Edge Hill - wow what a view! We definitely want to go back!

Local attractions

This is a brilliant base for explores in an area of outstanding natural beauty. Take off on tours of cracking Cotswold villages such as Bourton-on-the-Water (40 minutes’ drive) or stick closer to home with trips to the National Herb Centre and the Redwings Horse Sanctuary (10 minutes). Go north to Stratford-upon-Avon next for wanders around Shakespeare’s birthplace. The Swan Theatre, where the bard’s plays are performed, is here, as is his wife Anne Hathaway’s historical cottage. Already swotted up on the poet’s life and work? Rent a boat to bob up and down on the Avon River. For a trip to yet another top town, chuck Royal Leamington Spa (25 minutes) on the itinerary and roam around Regency buildings such as the colonnade-covered Royal Pump Rooms, formerly a 19th-century bathhouse and now the Leamington Spa Art Gallery and Museum.
