  • Green and serene site in the spectacular Staffordshire Moorlands
  • Alton Towers within a 20-minute drive and 30 to the Peak District
  • 3.5 acres of open fields, five minutes from restaurants and pubs
For rollercoasters and roams alike, head off on a hol to Springfields Countryside Caravan and Camping, a 3.5-acre site with a large open field for playing in off a peaceful lane with hilly views. It’s less than a 20-minute drive to the rides at Alton Towers, 15 minutes to the city of Stoke-on-Trent and 200 metres from the main road… but the spectacular Staffordshire Moorlands surrounds mean you wouldn’t have a clue that it's all so close by. Tear yourself away from the vistas and ponder eats: they’re varied in the local area, with pubs and restaurants as well as Indian and Chinese takeaways five minutes away by car. In charge of cooking? The supermarkets of Cheadle are your spots to stock up less than a 10-minute drive up the road. Once you’ve got your meals sorted, you could be skirting the edges of the glorious Peak District National Park in half an hour, ready to roam around traditional market towns like Buxton Spa. Other typically English things to do in this area include perusing the pottery at the popular Wedgewood Museum at World of Wedgewood (15 minutes’ drive) and Gladstone Pottery Museum (10 minutes) or riding the working steam Foxfield Light Railway and the Churnet Valley Railway (10 and 15 minutes away). Alternatively, you can make like you’re in Milan by having a gander at the Italian-style Trentham Gardens about 20 minutes down the road. As is fitting for such a countryside setting, barbecues and campfires are permitted on site, and there's a washing-up area to aid with the cleanup mission. Also on site are toilets and showers revamped for the 2020 season.

FHU grass campsite

Liked: We had 3 family groups staying in 3 different accommodations, we had a large pitch which allowed us space to spread out. The little ones loved the park and playing area. Toilets and showers are compact, however they are hot with no pushbutton tap. There is a campers kitchen with a fridge freezer and microwave. The hosts David and Sharon were always happy to help if needed. You can buy the real essentials on site-, prosseco, firewood and hot chocolate but everything else the is a supermarket near by.

The Fox Den Trailer 2 bedroom rental tent

Liked: Peaceful site. We stayed a few times before as our children love it. Easy to find and the site keepers were extremely friendly on arrival. Pitches were large, we had a fully serviced trailer tent. The toilet blocks were clean and had everything you needed. There was a kitchen block with a fridge freezer which you could use if you labelled your items. This also had a microwave. Pitches have firepit and you could get wood from the site keepers at a reasonable price. They provided bricks if you wanted to bbq off the ground too. If you want back to nature camping, then this wouldn't disappoint.

FHU grass campsite

Liked: A very nice, small campsite. Well laid out with grass allowed to grow between pitches, which is very pleasant. Close to shops and pubs, but just far away to feel "in the wild". The toilets and showers are kept very clean and perfectly functional with lots of hot water. The people running the site were an absolute pleasure, and always available. All in all a very pleasant stay despite the appalling weather we had.

Disliked: Nothing to dislike.

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked: A fabulous site! Great facilities, close to Alton Towers, Stoke potteries, Waterworld, and more. Clean showers and toilets, a quaint woodland area with info shed and washing up shed, also with fridge freezer and microwave. A catalogue of personal disasters, inc forgetting the air awning pump, not checking the camping gas bottle, and booking the wrong pitch by mistake (no electricity for the van), Sharon and Paul couldn’t have been more helpful. They loaned us a charging unit until a pitch with electrics was free, moved us as swiftly as possible, AND put up with a few tears! Thanks, guys. ❤️ The kids’ play area was great too, and it was nice to have it in the middle so everyone can keep a watchful eye on their little ones. Great views, peaceful and people respectful of quiet hours. We will be back … with gas, an awning pump, and the right pitch booking! 🤣 *Oh, and we used the info shed and went to the recommended Ship pub in Tean. Well worth a trip, if you want an above average pub meal in nice surroundings. Good tip!

Liked: Lovely views, spotlessly clean facilities, enormous well kept pitches and really lovely hosts. The wardens work so hard tending to the grounds and they do a great job. Good washing up area.Dog friendly with lots of natural areas for them to sniff. We’d stayed here once before but it was even better this time. We are coming again next year for sure.

Route directions

Caravans and motorhomes should always approach the site from the A521 Draycott Road, turning into Breach Lane, where you will find the site 200 metres down the lane. Approaching from the A522 is not recommended as it involves driving along a mile of narrow single-track road and a difficult turn into the site entrance.

Local attractions

Whether you’re up for browsing the racks, meeting monkeys or taking on treetop adventures, Trentham Estate (20 minutes’ drive) is the place to go: this one-stop complex set around an old manor house has a shopping village, apes and a rope-based expedition course through the forest. Rather watch the horses or bike racing than rush about in the woods? Uttoxeter Racecourse is 20 minutes away from Springfields Countryside Caravan and Camping, while the Darley Moor Motor Cycle Road Race Club is reachable in half an hour. For calmer times, the stunning Dove Dale Stepping Stones and Thorpe Cloud – a limestone hill with views out over the Midland plain – are 20 minutes from the park for riverside and mountain walks. Or maybe try a bit of fishing? Blake Hall Fisheries (10 minutes' drive) sells day tickets for its three well-stocked lakes.
