  • Small, peaceful wildlife haven at the base of the Shropshire Hills
  • A 35-minute drive from the Carding Mill Valley and the Long Mynd
  • Free tea and coffee; firepits in the wood or meadow; pub nearby
A back-to-basics retreat surrounded by ample countryside ambles high up there on your holiday goals? Powkesmore Holding should certainly be up your street. At the foot of Brown Clee Hill, Shropshire’s highest summit, Powkesmore Holding is simply peaceful and simply basic, as this small site is all about being in a wildlife haven surrounded by the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – but still 20 minutes’ drive away from Bridgnorth for that livelier way of life. Brought back to life in 2001, this site has been transformed from the uninhabitable (where water was drawn from a well) to a splendid wildlife haven with five acres of woodland and pasture. With an ethos for conservation, it’s now a place where refugee pheasants often take up residence. After 20 years of the owners' hard work and admiration for the destination, the site has some bells and whistles, including an amenities block and running water. As well as free tea and coffee, there are firepits in the woods or meadow when guests fancy rustling up an open campfire. For other food and drink needs, there’s a pub five minutes’ drive away from the site, just the spot to relax with a beer in hand.

Local attractions

This area is a maze of market towns, and you’ll have a few a short drive away to map your way out to… perhaps Bridgnorth (20 minutes’ drive), Ludlow (half an hour) or Shrewsbury (50 minutes), where picking up knick-knacks is a treat if you time your visit right. What about those places that were often haunted by the society of old? Well, Stokesay Castle (half an hour) is a 13th-century manor house with a moat, while Attingham Park (40 minutes) is a proper sight to behold, thanks to the National Trust mansion and deer park. If you thought a hill couldn’t be historic too, then the Stiperstones (an hour) is likely to prove you wrong. The hiking trails count off ancient cairns, hill forts and lead mines. Carding Mill Valley and the Long Mynd (35 minutes) is another prime area for hilly hikes, while Clun Castle (40 minutes) continues the tour of older times, as the 11th-century ruins are a fine example of what was once a motte-and-bailey fortress.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Nice, quiet campsite. Great facilities, which are kept clean. Additional communal facilities not normally present at a campsite such as a large fire pit with overhead tarpaulin and benches; wooden hut with sofas. Hosts Andy and Kate were friendly and visited both days we were there. No complaints, would revisit. Thank you!

Shepherd's hut

Liked: Well Wow. What can I say. One of the best places I’ve stayed. The hosts were amazing, the shower, kitchen area and toilet cleaned regularly. Lovely wooded area to walk your dog. The kids had an outside Movie night. Everything you needed was available and nothing was too much trouble. Highly recommended to everyone. The site was large and spacious and only 5 units. I stayed in the shepherds hut and it was very nice and a king size bed. Very comfortable. Outside each unit there was an enclosed gazebo with all your cooking equipment and a gas cooker. All you need is your clothes, towels and food. Tea, coffee and sugar is provided in the kitchen. Can’t wait to return. Thank you for a lovely weekend.

Disliked: Having to go home

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: There weren't many pitches so it wasn't overcrowded or noisy The owners were lovely people, who were very helpful, clean toilet and shower, there was a kitchenette with toaster, microwave, kettle etc. This was very useful. Under cover firepit.

Disliked: The road leading up to the site was very bumpy,we worried sometimes that the exhaust may be scraping.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: The welcome and help from the owners; the camper's kitchen with fridge, microwave, wi-fi charging points, toaster, ketle, coffee and tea, mugs, cutlery, mattress inflator; the space between pitches; access to woodland; use of fire pits (which we did not use...but might next time). The showers and toilet facities were good; only 1 of each but not a big problem with the numbers on the site. Excellent Post Office/Spa in the village; a quality cafe open some days of the week and a local garage with keenly priced fuel! The overall location gave us good access to Bridgnorth, Ludlow, Church Stretton, Craven Arms, Stokesay,Much Wenlock for example - all well worth visiting. The ample space available in the field, with access to neighbouring woodland.

Disliked: The approach to the campsite, off Ashleigh Road is easy to miss and the driveway is a bit rough in patches - take it slow! Also our car bleepers, warning of possible hazards, went into overdrive owing to the amount of overhanging branches along the approach drive! Ideally a better CAMP SITE sign, and hedge trimming would solve these very minor issues; but then other people would be able to find this gem of a site...

Bell tent (four person)

Liked: The location, the bell tents, the fantastic camp kitchens, the cleanliness, the owners, the woods, the cinema showing on Sat night...

Disliked: Nothing! (Bit of faint music from a local wedding on the Sat night but it wasn't a problem and it didn't go on too long)
