  • Off-grid, peaceful Shropshire woodland site within a Forest School
  • A 20-minute drive to Telford and 30 minutes away from Shrewsbury
  • Well-equipped kitchen, eco-friendly amenities, firepits and barbecues
Fancy swapping the sound of your smartphone pinging for the noise of birdsong? Then book in a trip at Wrekin Forest Events Camping, an off-grid site with a back to basics feel in lush Shropshire surrounds. This peaceful place also comes with handy essentials to help amp up a weekend in the woods, from fairy lights and festoon lamps to a barbecue, firepits and a well-equipped kitchen (although please note there's no fridge or freezer due to the off-grid nature of the site). While a stay at this park’s all about getting lost in the forest (bring your pup along to help you sniff your way back...) or letting the kids loose on the large playing field (with swings, sandpit, football net, badminton and table tennis), ace activities and attractions are all around too. It’s a 20-minute drive to Telford from here for the landmark Iron Bridge as well as a kids’ park with heritage trails and an aerial rope course. If educational times for the small fry are what you’re after, it's handy to note that the site is set in a Forest School with activities like archery, air rifle shooting, open-fire cooking and den building available, and outdoorsy courses available for primary school pupils. It's 25 minutes from the Museum of the Gorge as well, one of 10 around town giving a glimpse at the history of the Industrial Revolution in this area where it all began. (If even more poking into the past appeals, Blists Hill Victorian Town is around the same distance with its recreated 19th-century village and staff dressed up in fancy period clothes… and should be a hit with those primary-aged pupils too.) To nosey in nature instead, The Wrekin is a 25-minute drive from the park: putter to the hillfort’s 1,335-foot top and check out views over 17 of England’s counties or have picnics at the peak. And if you’d prefer to just hang out at your new home from home, plenty of space is available for outdoor games like croquet, swing ball and Jenga (all available to hire from the owners).

From the manager: Hi, thank you for taking the time to review your stay. We are pleased you enjoyed your stay and would consider a return visit. We would love to know how we did not meet your expectation regarding facilities, customer service and child friendliness. We have a shared kitchen for all the things you might forget, flushing toilets a hot water shower and large pitches. We have a huge playground with a tree house, swing and sand pit for the children, we don't provide bats and balls anymore as we have found the disrespect level for property since covid has been such that nothing survives even 24 hrs. You have a fabulous forest school and another huge field in which to play football. In terms of customer service, I am really sorry if we let you down in anyway. We had a crazy busy bank holiday, but on the Monday we did spend sometime with family so we were not around all day, just the morning and late afternoon rather than all day. We do say we are unmanned though. Please let us know how we could have done better. We always want to improve. Judie & Anthony

Rental tent (comfort, no pets)

Liked: Everything was perfect.. quite brilliantly organised site. Comfort was just that cosy and comfortable and had everything we needed for a relaxing stay. It was lovely to be off grid and be in this beautiful natural space with ease and comfort. I found myself wishing my children were younger (they are both adults now!) so they could join the Forest school because that looks brilliant! The shower is great too! Thanks so much Judie !

Disliked: Seeing Judie (who has created such a great space for others to enjoy) having to sort campers rubbish!!! People who visit really should take responsibility for their own waste / recycling… the bins are very clearly labelled! PLEASE EVERYONE if you visit please be responsible for disposing of waste properly 🙏

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Claire, thank you for your lovely review and your considerate response regarding recycling. It was a pleasure having you to stay and we would be delighted to see you again. Next time you come we will do archery and air rifle shooting with you...Forest School is not just for the kids 🤣 Thank you, Judie & Anthony

Dormouse House rental tent (four person)

Liked: What a hidden gem they have here. Very basic anemities but we didn't mind. The rental tent suited us just fine and we're greatful to have beds and basic equipment included. Set up right in the forest which felt so magical, firepit also included made the nights so memorable too. The real star of the show was forest school (tickets booked separately) but wow what an amazing experience for me and my children. Hoping to come back next year and try out one of the huts!

Disliked: Only two flushing toilets so just a bit of a queue in the mornings!

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you so much for your lovely review. You would be very welcome back anytime and we are so pleased you had a fab time. Lets hope the water table drops enough to get our compost toilets back on line again for next year and that might help the queue. See you soon. Judie & Anthony

Owls Nest shepherd's hut

Liked: We loved the Shepherds hut and the back to basics simplicity of it, it was wonderful just being in the forest. The site has everything you could need, there's even flushing loos as well as composting toilets, we loved our stay sharing bread with the pheasant's that wandered out of the forest. The actual forest school was the biggest I have ever seen and superbly run, my two tried archery and whittled some wood into dream catchers, everyone had a wonderful time, thoroughly recommend! if you want all inclusive and maid service its probably not for you! Judie and Anthony were wonderful hosts nothing was too much trouble.

Disliked: The fact that some people steal crockery and pans that are supplied in good faith for all to use and make your holidays more enjoyable, together with trugs of logs for their fire pits that are only a fiver to start with, with all wood cut personally by Anthony. Sometimes people disgust me.

From the manager: Hi, thank you for your lovely review. We really appreciate you taking the time to give us feedback. Our resident pheasant has become rather friendly and cheeky! Thank you for the comment on logs...£20 worth of logs went missing that weekend, sad that people don't appreciate the work that goes in to getting them in the first place. Same really with kitchen bits. We really hope you visit again. Judie & Anthony

From the manager: Thank you! It was lovely to meet you. So glad you survived your night alone. The woodland is surprisingly noisy at night with nature, but it is also so grounding to be in the woodlands with only the company of the birds and rabbits. We would very much enjoy welcoming you in the future. Judie & Anthony

Foxes Den camping pod (no pets)

Liked: Lets face it it all comes down to how much.....well not as much as you would think! I stayed in the Fox's Den (converted Pig Arc). It was adequately equipped, meaning i just needed bedding, food, change of clothes and toiletries. It is a forest area so anyone not expecting mud when it rains may need to rethink, the latest white Nike trainers are best left at home. The multitude of bird song and the volume seems almost like it was being played back through hidden speakers. I liked the sense of community, like camping used to be! Communications and instructions very clear. Although once on site your mobile becomes a paper weight....that might scare a few people but why not be ok with that?...Something we all need to do more often is to make time and remove ourselves from what we have become and find who we are.

Disliked: The stay was too short.

Local attractions

In Shropshire with the intent of shuffling about in the lush landscape? Drive to Ironbridge first off (half an hour away) and steel yourself for a 139-mile stroll on the Shropshire Way. Alternatively, if that sounds a little lengthy for your liking, Much Wenlock is around the same distance and leads to the 19-mile limestone ridge of Wenlock Edge (and fun fact: it was formerly a tropical coral reef aeons ago when this area was under the sea). If this gets you craving some water-based whiling, take a stroll over to a Much Wenlock activity centre for canoeing, kayaking and rafting on the River Severn, plus quad biking and clay pigeon shooting on land. Boldings Pools (30 minutes) meanwhile is your go-to if angling for carp, bream and roach sounds like a grand day out...
