Play park by one of the camping fields

  • Family site one mile from the market town of Wem
  • Within 25 minutes' drive of Shrewsbury, Ellesmere and Whitchurch
  • Two play areas, crazy golf and a supermarket with off-licence on site
Opened by the Shingler family in 1974, Lower Lacon Caravan Park is just a mile from the stunning market town of Wem in north Shropshire. With train and bus services in Wem being within walking distance, the site has easy access to plenty of local attractions, including Shrewsbury, Ellesmere and Whitchurch (which are all within 25 minutes' drive of the site if you'd rather take your own transport). The site has a very convenient and secure set-up, with a barrier system, 24-hour emergency cover and a warden and owners living on site. There are two play areas on site, as well as crazy golf and a heated outdoor swimming pool with a toddler's paddling pool (please take note that the pools are only open during high season for pre-booked sessions only, and weather dependent). For extra entertainment, the J.A.K.K.S. Barn (open on weekends during low season and closed during winter) has a bar and occasional family discos. When you're hungry, pick up snacks at the on-site supermarket, which also has an off-licence. The J.A.K.K.S. café and takeaway (open on weekends during low season and closed during winter) are on hand for further refreshments. By the pool, there's the choice of CJ's Snack Bar (weather dependent) and the adults-only Windmill Lounge Bar (only open during high season or on weekends during low season and winter), which has a marquee. Lower Lacon Caravan Park has a pretty cool backstory, having started as the back entrance for the Aston Park American Army Camp, a munitions and distribution depot built in World War II (on land purchased from owner Clive's paternal grandfather). During its development, a D8 bulldozer sank in the soil, so the land was covered with three feet of solid materials from local foundries; this can make placing pegs difficult but it also means that the team have never had to turn away any customers due to bad weather as the pitches stay firm.

Liked: FABULOUS site, it's got everything you need on site. Very clean and tidy, The rangers are always about and extremely helpful. Good dog walking area, my 2 loved a good run off the lead in a secure area. There is a pitch area for non dog lovers too. Well stocked shop, crazy golf, swimming pool, club houses. This will definitely be our go to site when we don't want to go far. Give it a try ! 😍

Liked: Lots of facilities and things to do on site. There's animals to see and a reasonably stocked shop. Really friendly helpful staff.

Disliked: Toilet block could do with a little refresh and shower burst is only 15 seconds! Paid for WiFi for 2 devices but it only connected to one then said maximum number reached.

Powered grass campsite (small)

Liked: The friendliness off the staff is amazing, nothing was to much for them. Stayed for wem carnival. Never got a chance to go anywhere on the site. But the site looked clean. Always had toilet roll in the toilets and the floor was clean in there aswell. The wardens was super nice and so helpful. Amazing signal on my phone while I was there. Shop is reasonably price and even got a fridge magnet. There was llamas/alpacas a short distance but could see them from the caravan which was nice.

Disliked: The hornets that wanted to camp in my caravan on the 1st night. Called the warden and they got rid of them. The wardens was friendly and had a laugh with them. Not really a dislike as the campsite cant control who wants to go camping including flying bugs. The pitches became water logged after heavy rain but thats mother nature's fault not the campsite itself.

Powered grass campsite (large, no pets)

Liked: Chose orange pitch (no dogs allowed) lovely and quiet, opposite the park which the children loved. Nice size pool, which you have to book slots for which is ideal because it's never too crowded. Toile & shower facilities all OK. And a handy shop & cafe onsite. Also entertainment onsite aswell. Grounds men nice, friendly & helpful. Overall a lovely relaxing camping trip to end the summer.

Disliked: Location abit boring, not much going on outside of the campsite. Nowhere really to go on day trips unless you venture out.

Primitive grass campsite (no pets, small)

Liked: lots to do 8 year old daughter loved it, pool great but was cold when we went as it was very windy, really enjoyed the frisbee game

Disliked: overflowing bins, tents very close together and so very noisy at night once the club house kicked everyone out because people were going back to their tents to party so some families may not like this, wardens never seen

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your review, Yes the bins were a problem in your area (and this weekend in general), even though they were emptied on Saturday. Also sorry you felt overcrowded on the small pitches that you booked, as they're only really designed for a 4x8 meter unit including gazebo. Tents are getting much bigger these days, so we are thinking of phasing them out. We do have a 24 hour warden phone number so you can report any problems day or night. I I know they were in the area late on Friday and Saturday night as I walked round that with them but this was about 1 o'clock in the morning by then. Hope to see you again soon. Kind Regards Robert

Local attractions

Shropshire is a pretty peaceful place without too many crowds most of the time, so grab your chance to get stuck into a few gentle activities like floating on the Shropshire Union Canal, river Severn or Llangollen canal (50 minutes' drive). The site is also within striking distance of Ironbridge Gorge (45 minutes), a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Adore exploring the history of a place? Take yourself to spots like the British Ironwork Centre (35 minutes), Blists Hill Victorian Town (40 minutes) and Royal Air Force Museum Midlands (40 minutes), or pretend like you've gone back in time at Attingham Park (25 minutes), a National Trust site. The Quarry (half an hour) is a gorgeous spot for a little stroll in Shrewsbury, and if you fancy something a bit more challenging, Hawkstone Park Follies (five minutes) has sandstone hills and caves. If you're looking for activities that'll entertain the kids, however, make a beeline for Hoo Zoo and Dinosaur World (35 minutes). The site is near plenty of historic Shropshire towns and villages, from Hodnet (10 minutes) and Ellesmere (20 minutes) to Market Drayton (20 minutes) and Oswestry (40 minutes).
