  • Peaceful family-friendly site on the banks of the River Severn
  • Shrewsbury sights, restaurants and shops within 15 minutes' walk
  • Half an hour from Ironbridge Gorge and the Shropshire Hills
In need of an escape? Settle in at Camping at West Midlands Showground, a family-friendly Shropshire site less than 15 minutes’ walk from Shrewsbury town centre, where tourist sites and shopping are within easy reach and there’s plenty of green space for kids and the dogs to run around on. Peaceful urban getaways are a dream here: days can be spent wandering the winding medieval streets of Shrewsbury, exploring castle and abbey, strolling around gardens and parks, following the Darwin Town Trail (the evolutionist was born here) and taking boating trips on the Severn. Anyone fishing for a good time should swim back to site and cast a line in the Severn. Part of the Greenhous West Mid Showground, the site’s facilities are pretty basic, but it does have its own fishing rights – plus it's well set for getting the most out of Shropshire and Shrewsbury explores, and finding fab eateries, pubs and ways to pass the time will be a piece of cake. Speaking of cake, there are plenty of restaurants in Shrewsbury for local bites, and barbecues are welcome on site for cooking more substantial meals.

Powered grass campsite

Liked: Was given a great pitch on the quieter side, asked to be near toilets and was put very close to a block. Close to town, easy walk. Nice to be close to the river, kids enjoyed it. Lots of space to play around. Toilet block was nice and big and clean. Kids enjoyed using the milkshake machine 😋 great flavours and good price.

Disliked: Taps in toilet block only had cold water and the lights didn't work properly as something was tripping the electric box

Powered grass campsite

Liked: Spacious pitches. Easy walk into Shrewsbury town centre.

Disliked: Facilities definitely need updating. Even the newer toilet/shower block isn’t really that great. Unfortunately we appear to have booked the wrong weekend as there was a very unruly family staying when we arrived who thankfully left the following morning only to be replaced by a wedding party and a scout camp! The very loud music from the wedding lasted until midnight and we were rudely woken at 6am by very noisy children from the scout tents.

Great site conveniently located close to the town. A number of pubs a short walk away.
Small shower trailer was perfectly adequate for number of people staying on site. Plenty of other toilets and a number of elsan points conveniently located. A bonus was the free WiFi.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: Great site, lovely friendly staff. Nothing is too much trouble! Great bathrooms - can't fault it.

Disliked: The only problem that we had is that we did not receive a welcome email, even after emailing the site a few days before enquiring where it was (had no response). We have stayed a couple of years ago and we knew this was the procedure so we didn't have the codes to access the site late at night. We also noticed the site had WiFi but because of no welcome email we did not have the password. It's a minor issue I know, but we found it a bit strange. Luckily Mick the warden gave us the codes for the gates and he did ask us if we had received the welcome email.

There was also a large family on the site who took over the laundry room for the duration of our stay, they washed everything in sight (must have brought the contents of their house with them to be washed). They had clothes and household items hanging all over the room and had bags and bags of washing making it impossible to use the facilities. It was rather inconsiderate of this family.

From the manager: Hi - Thanks for your feedback - AS you stae we have not operated that e mail system for over 2 years, prefering to ask customers to come to main reception on arrival where you will be greeted, sited and be given a welcome pack, which explains everything you need to know about the site.

Sorry about your experience of the Laundry room, it is a shame that our goodwill is sometimes is abused which is frustrating.

Thanks again

Local attractions

Once Shrewsbury has been well and truly explored (don’t forget a pitstop at The Mount, birthplace of Charles Darwin), venturing out into nature will be a welcome break from bricks and mortar. The site is a little over half an hour’s drive from the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, where scenic wanders, horse riding, gliding and paragliding are the order of the day. If those walking boots haven’t seen enough action, make tracks for Buttington (35 minutes' drive) to join the Offa’s Dyke long-distance path and follow 177 miles of England-Wales border – alternatively, rest weary legs with a scenic boat tour along the Severn, leaving 15 minutes away. There’s plenty of history hereabouts, so dive right in with a look inside the fab 18th-century mansion at Attingham Park (and a stroll around the gardens and parkland) or a stop at the spectacular Sunnycroft villa in nearby Telford. Go from finery to industry by trundling along to the Ironbridge Gorge UNESCO site to explore the birthplace of the industrial revolution, making time for the recreated Victorian town of Blists Hill, the Coalport China Museum and the world’s first ever cast-iron bridge. Stay in the past (the very, very distant past) with a trip to Wroxeter Roman City and Vineyard, or return to the present with some modern urban days: Telford is half an hour away and has a snowboard and skiing centre that should keep families entertained, while Birmingham Is a little over an hour and a half from base if a real big-city vibe is needed.
