  • Peaceful family-friendly site on the banks of the River Severn
  • Shrewsbury sights, restaurants and shops within 15 minutes' walk
  • Half an hour from Ironbridge Gorge and the Shropshire Hills
In need of an escape? Settle in at Camping at West Midlands Showground, a family-friendly Shropshire site less than 15 minutes’ walk from Shrewsbury town centre, where tourist sites and shopping are within easy reach and there’s plenty of green space for kids and the dogs to run around on. Peaceful urban getaways are a dream here: days can be spent wandering the winding medieval streets of Shrewsbury, exploring castle and abbey, strolling around gardens and parks, following the Darwin Town Trail (the evolutionist was born here) and taking boating trips on the Severn. Anyone fishing for a good time should swim back to site and cast a line in the Severn. Part of the Greenhous West Mid Showground, the site’s facilities are pretty basic, but it does have its own fishing rights – plus it's well set for getting the most out of Shropshire and Shrewsbury explores, and finding fab eateries, pubs and ways to pass the time will be a piece of cake. Speaking of cake, there are plenty of restaurants in Shrewsbury for local bites, and barbecues are welcome on site for cooking more substantial meals.

Liked Good location short walk into Shrewsbury. Showers clean and hot

Disliked The whole site which is very large could do with a tidy up, lots of junk lying about.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Hi Thanks for your feedback - not sure what you mean y about Junk - but we are getting the site ready for the season as we are restricted on the timing of this as we regularly suffer catastrophic flooding in the winter months.

Powered grass and gravel travel trailer campsite

Liked Brilliantly situated for access to Shrewsbury, 10/15 minute walk, beautiful town, steeped in history, lots of shops, pubs, cafes, faultless.

Disliked Gravel pitch nice and level, warden very friendly, toilets, showers pretty basic, not the cleanest, I understand from warden that site is run by a charity, it does need updating, which is a pity because where it is situated is a nice spot, just needs sprucing up a bit.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thanks for your feedback - I am sorry the Showers wasn't as clean as they should be - they are regularly cleaned and you would have noticed i'm sure that volunteers and staff were making improvements when you were here

Real shame as it could be a really good site with some investment

Liked Site is large and a really big field for Kids and Dogs not that we have either.
Short walk into Shrewsbury

Disliked The signs for reception take you to an empty block some distance from the camp site. The shower block has only five showers and is a portacabin. The hygiene is poor for example only some blocks have soap and a hand drier toilet rolls stacked onto the handle of the loo brush floor can be quite dirty at the end of the day.
The toilet blocks are basic with an untreated concrete floor so cant be mopped reminded me of a a cattle shed. Dogs left to just roam around the site off lead even thought there is a big field to exercise them. No recycling facilities on site. No gray water drain so you have to bucket gray water from the van into the chemical emptying point. Chemical emptying point is open to the elements and not secured easy for kids and dogs to get into its basically just an open drain. The warden is really rude and aggressive when you mention the issues above all he basically says is we are a charity so the normal rules don't apply to us.

From the manager: We were expecting a review along these lines, however it’s disappointing that a number of important facts have been omitted.

Despite you arriving a day late, we honoured your full booking and extended your stay to accommodate you. During your time on site, I personally witnessed behaviour that fell short of the respectful standards we expect from our guests. As the saying goes, treating others how you wish to be treated goes a long way.

Our team of staff and volunteers were working hard throughout your stay to prepare and maintain the site. When you raised the issue of soap in the shower block, it was addressed promptly. We take reasonable concerns seriously and act on them where we can.

It’s also worth noting that you did not follow the clearly marked signs to the main reception, where you would have been properly welcomed and given a full overview of the site and its facilities.

Regarding the facilities: we are completely transparent in our listing. We are a showground offering basic facilities, not a luxury campsite. This is clearly stated and reflected in our pricing and reviews. The heated £40k portable shower block you refer to is designed specifically so it can be moved in the event of severe winter flooding. This is precisely why permanent infrastructure is not always viable and we are constantly having to repair and make do those that we have.

As a charity, we operate on very tight margins. Your stay cost approximately £80 for three nights, significantly less than a 5-star campsite, where you would likely pay closer to £200 for the same period, often with additional taxi costs on top, when we are just a short walk away from our beautiful town.

We do not advertise fully serviced pitches, and the grey water disposal point is clearly explained. A short walk (in your case was about 7 meters away from your motorhome) to dispose of waste is standard for many basic sites.

Our site warden is a valued volunteer who is consistently praised in the majority of our reviews for being helpful and welcoming. If you experienced an issue, it may be worth reflecting on how that interaction developed, he was upset by your constant unwarranted criticism and disrespectful comments and very poor attitude, which I also witnessed.

In summary.

Read site descriptions carefully before booking to ensure expectations align.

Consider selling your motorhome so you can stay regularly in 5* Hotels - we are not sure camping/motor homing is for you.

Consider a trip to Spec Savers

Liked Spacious pitches. We were parked next to the road, which wasn't a problem as no vehicles using it. Staff so friendly and welcoming. Short walk into town. Amenities were clean, but it was very quiet with only a few pitches occupied. Lovely stretch of river for fishing. Free wifi. Would use again out of season

Disliked Hot water, first come first served, so very often none left for washing up. Toilet rolls stored on handle of Toilet Brush, sitting in brush holder. So we used our own paper. Suggest putting shelves up to store loo rolls and installing loo roll holders.

Local attractions

Once Shrewsbury has been well and truly explored (don’t forget a pitstop at The Mount, birthplace of Charles Darwin), venturing out into nature will be a welcome break from bricks and mortar. The site is a little over half an hour’s drive from the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, where scenic wanders, horse riding, gliding and paragliding are the order of the day. If those walking boots haven’t seen enough action, make tracks for Buttington (35 minutes' drive) to join the Offa’s Dyke long-distance path and follow 177 miles of England-Wales border – alternatively, rest weary legs with a scenic boat tour along the Severn, leaving 15 minutes away. There’s plenty of history hereabouts, so dive right in with a look inside the fab 18th-century mansion at Attingham Park (and a stroll around the gardens and parkland) or a stop at the spectacular Sunnycroft villa in nearby Telford. Go from finery to industry by trundling along to the Ironbridge Gorge UNESCO site to explore the birthplace of the industrial revolution, making time for the recreated Victorian town of Blists Hill, the Coalport China Museum and the world’s first ever cast-iron bridge. Stay in the past (the very, very distant past) with a trip to Wroxeter Roman City and Vineyard, or return to the present with some modern urban days: Telford is half an hour away and has a snowboard and skiing centre that should keep families entertained, while Birmingham Is a little over an hour and a half from base if a real big-city vibe is needed.
