  • Shropshire glampsite on a farm 10 minutes’ drive from Oswestry
  • British Ironwork Centre five minutes’ drive; Shrewsbury 25 minutes
  • Well-furnished bell tents with rural views; barbecues and firepits
No need to pack a tent or any of your camping gear when you book a stay at Fords Farm Glamping, 10 minutes’ drive from Oswestry in Shropshire, for the accommodation here is in smartly decked-out bell tents. Just pack yourselves and some clothes, towels and food, arrive on site, move into your tent and that’s it – you’re officially on holiday. Set on a peaceful working farm centred on a half-timbered 16th-century farmhouse, each bell tent on the level glamping field has field and countryside views. Inside is an array of beds (each can sleep up to six, all linen is provided), storage, kitchen utensils and cosy extras like rugs, cushions and comfy sofas, as well as a woodburning stove to keep any chills away. Moving outside, the tents all have a firepit, barbecue and picnic tables for alfresco dining, and there’s also a covered communal eating area with views over the farm. Alternatively, you can try Oswestry market town for shopping and dining, or stay more local and head for the pub (five minutes’ walk), which serves home-cooked food and Shropshire ales. Spotless showers, a washing-up area and charging facilities complete the roster of amenities on the glamping field.

Snowdrop bell tent

Liked: Glamping at it’s best! The hosts have thought of every last thing you could need for your trip. We only stayed for one night, but found the facilities were fantastic. In a lovely little setting with friendly dogs and owners 😊 Would love to come again for longer!

Snowdrop bell tent

Liked: I like the fact that there were only 4 pitches so not likely to get rowdy. The pitches are well provisioned with hot water, cold water, heating, eating and cooking facilities. The wandering chickens were lovely, the little honesty shop a great idea. The owner was lovely and helpful.

Local attractions

There’s lots of history connected with this quiet corner of Shropshire. The medieval towns of Shrewsbury (25 minutes’ drive) and Chester (50 minutes) both make interesting day trips for their striking half-timbered architecture. Combine history with a stroll as you circumnavigate the massive Iron Age hill fort at Old Oswestry (10 minutes), or scramble up to the 18th-century wear memorial at Admiral Rodney’s Pillar (40 minutes) for views across Shropshire into Wales. You can also amble to Thomas Telford’s Horseshoe Falls by Llangollen’s Pontcysyllte Aqueduct (half an hour) or stretch your legs on a hike to the spectacular three-step Pistyll Rhaeadr Waterfall (40 minutes). There are gentle waterside strolls to be had at The Mere at Ellesmere (15 minutes), and if the kids need to burn off some energy, treat them to a day on the water slides at Alderford Lake (half an hour). Chances are most ages will be intrigued by the super-sized gorillas, dragons and spiders at the outdoor sculpture park in the British Ironwork Centre (five minutes). If you’re happy to travel further afield, you can go deep underground at the National Slate Museum in Eryri (formerly Snowdonia) National Park (an hour).
