Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked: Great small site in a fab location. Really good and clean toilets and showers. Also added bonus was the indoor kitchen area where you could sit and have a drink! Friendly site owners. Lovely walks nearby and a great pub about a 45 minute walk away!

Otter camping pod

Liked: My first time going anywhere for the night by myself with my two dogs and I couldn’t have been happier or more comfortable. I stayed in the Badger pod which was so cosy and thoughtfully put together, inside was a double wooden framed bed, a sofa, tv and kettle. The bed was super comfortable and the pod was so cosy! Everyone on site was really friendly and my two dogs had a lovely time. There is direct access to the lake walk from the site which was perfect. I will definitely be back!

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Lovely fields with woods and mere nearby. Plots were well spaced out. We chose one further away from facilities so it was really peaceful. There is a really homely communal kitchen and space where you can relax and the toilets and showers were great - felt like you weren't on a camp site at all!

Local attractions

There's stacks to do in the surrounding area, whether you want to stick close to home by foot or pedal, or drive a bit further afield to the towns, tourist attractions and landscapes of Shropshire, Cheshire and north-east Wales – the city of Chester is 40 minutes away and Llangollen on the River Dee reachable within an hour. On the doorstep, tackle the two-mile walk along the canal towpath to Ellesmere or make your way via the purpose-built circular walk and through a wooded area of rhododendrons around the mere and nature reserve, a Site of Special Scientific Interest with species galore to see like otters, lapwings and water birds. The reserve also has several deep fishing pools well-stocked with catfish and big carp; more fishing – and carp – can be had nearby at Blackmere along the towpath from Colmere. Also nearby, wander into Colemere village to see the fifteenth-century thatched cottages, listed in the Domesday Book, to Ellesmere for food festivals, regattas and boat rides on the mere, or drive to Rednal Karting, Paintballing and Laser for an exciting time ten minutes away. Castles including Chirk and Whittington are a doddle to drive to too. If being on the water is your thing, a narrowboat marina is a three-minute drive away from the caravan park and both Colemere and Whitemere sailing clubs are within easy reach. By car, the standard of whitewater rafting at Bala Adventure and Watersports will have you foaming at the mouth – a milder form of the sport, along with abseiling, gorge walking, a steam railway and horse-drawn boat trips is available over the border in Wales at Llangollen.
