Well-kept pitches (added by manager 19 Aug 2022)

Beautiful peaceful site
Plenty of space around the pitches

  • Family-run dog-friendly site in the village of Aston on Clun
  • 20 minutes' drive from Ludlow and 40 minutes from Shrewsbury
  • Easy access to the Shropshire Way and a short walk from local pub
Spectacular views, spacious pitches and only a short stroll from the village pub… that’ll do nicely, eh? Have them all at peaceful family-run Wayside Camping, in the petite village of Aston on Clun. The outlook here is of the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, a gorgeous area that furnishes guests with a very fine backdrop to an afternoon of chilling out or an evening gathering round the firepit or barbecue. It’s also a fab place to take your boots or bike – walking and cycle trails here cater for all comers from leisure strollers to more intrepid mountain bikers. Town time can be had nearby foraging in foodie Ludlow or meandering through medieval Shrewsbury, and there are a bunch of National Trust estates to gawp at too. Back at base, owners Ian and Tracy keep their nifty tourist info board updated with details of various local attractions and events. This quiet site hasn’t gone over the top with heaps of facilities: pitches have electrical supplies and guests have access to a modern toilet block with showers and a washing-up area. A shop is a few minutes’ walk away in the village, as is that all-important country pub (with a fine range of real ales, you may be chuffed to hear).

Powered grass campsite

Liked: A lovely small site that is well placed for exploring the local area and attractions while being a quiet and rural spot. We enjoyed the sheep neighbours and the morning birdsong. Generous tent pitches and as it’s a small site nothing is too far away. Facilities were always clean and the bar was an unexpected bonus with a wide selection and some local options.

Disliked: Nothing!

Shepherd's hut

Liked: We stayed in one of the shepherds huts on the site and we really enjoyed our stay. The campsite facilities are really good, well kept and clean. The shepherds hut was clean and had all the amenities that we needed. We also had a lovely view of the hills from the hut itself which is situated at the top end of the campsite. The huts also come with an outside BBQ and fire pit which we loved. It is located close to shops and chips shops and only a 15 minute drive to the long mynd and cardinal valley which is well worth a visit! There was a bar serving food and drinks which we didn't get the chance to use but saw others enjoying it. Would definitely recommend to couples looking for a quiet, last minute to get away. WiFi is available however we didn't use it.

Powered grass campsite

Liked: Small very quiet campsite in a great location in the Shropshire hills. Free showers, spotlessly clean facilities, decent sized pitches.

Disliked: That the bar and cafe is closed on Sundays and Mondays. WiFi didn't always work. Grumpy old couples complaining about children playing perfectly nicely (the site warden even acknowledged they weren't causing a problem!) Go to an adults only site if you don't want to see kids playing!

Liked: This is a very well run site and alot of care and attention has been taken by the owners to make sure all their guests have a comfortable break. Each pitch was generously proportioned and had easy access to electric and water. The toilets and showers were always clean and never overrun with people. The site was in a scenic and quiet situation and the distant noise of the road was barely discernable. The onsite bar was well stocked with a wide variety of alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks for the whole family to enjoy...I enjoyed the local cider, my wife had a proper made lattè coffee and the kids had a strawberry and banana smoothie. We also had pizzas that were very well made and the service was always friendly and helpful. Shropshire is a beautiful and well hidden county that has so much to offer for anyone who loves walking, biking and anything outdoors, as well as having a multitude of historical buildings and sites. I can highly recommend this site to anyone and as novice campers it met all our expectations and more...we'll definitely come back again.

Local attractions

Walkers may like to make their way to the Shropshire Way, a long-distance path that’s been carved up into lots of smaller portions, or head for the hilly heaths of Carding Mill Valley, 20 minutes away. While you’re there, hike up to the top of the Long Mynd for some fab views. Meanwhile, mountain bikers can test their skills on the trails 10 minutes away at Hopton Woods. This area is also home to a fine collection of castles: Stokesay Castle (five minutes away), the ruined Clun Castle (15 minutes) and Ludlow Castle (20 minutes) are all worth a stop. Ludlow’s also the place to pick up local eats at one of the local markets or independent shops. For more historic wanderings, take a trip to Shrewsbury, 40 minutes away, to see the famed black and white buildings, the abbey and another castle (of course). Or take your pick from the local National Trust piles: Attingham Park, Berrington Hall and Morville Hall are all within a 40-minute drive.
